Edge really picked up the ball, because Edge really wanted it to happen

"I'm old friends with U2. I've known them for nearly 20 years, and I'd listened to endless conversations with them talking about Leonard Cohen, so I knew how much that he meant to them. So I called Bono first and said would you say some of those things that you said to me over the years in the film. So they said sure. After I'd filmed the concert and pretty much cut the film, I was having coffee with Leonard one day and I said it seems a little weird that I have all these people singing and I don't have you singing, and he said, but I don't have a band, and I was like well, I know a band. So I went home and called Bono and said Leonard Cohen might sing with you, and they were such big fans that they were like woah,we've got to make this work. So I took Leonard to their gig in LA and introduced them, and he's a big fan of theirs, and Leonard just said I'm going to put this in your hands. Bono was very busy, I mean they were on tour and he had all these other things going on, but Edge really picked up the ball, because Edge really wanted it to happen. He had the band rehearsing this song all across America, and then I took Leonard to New York. But Edge was the one that really made it happen."  Edge even chose the song, and Lunson says Cohen very much enjoyed the experience of performing 'Tower of Song' with the band. ...  by Lian Lunson - Irish Independent - october 2006.

Stir received its world premiere at the Electric Lodge in Los Angeles in 2000. A woman revisits her long abandoned villa, and is transported back through emotions once lived. Following a vision of herself, she wanders from floor to floor. In each room, an aspect of her psyche, a memory, a dream, is revealed. When she finally reaches the attic, she catches her reflection in a mirror, and must confront the image staring back at her. Around New Orleans - october 13 - Lytana Winush and Kendall Plain dance up a storm as Joe 'Cool' Davis entertains Tulane students during the lunch hour at McAllister Auditorium on campus. More here

Critters invade New Orleans after Katrina - Alligators have been pulled from abandoned swimming pools. Foxes had to be removed from the airport. Coyotes are stalking rabbits and nutria (a sort of countrified rat) on the streets. And armadillos are undermining air conditioners. In the year since Hurricane Katrina drove out many of the people of New Orleans, wild animals have been moving in. Some were blown in by the winds or redistributed by the floodwaters. Others were drawn by the piles of rotting garbage and by the shelter afforded by all the abandoned homes and tall weeds. ... Read whole article on the eagle

Storm tours: A feeling for New Orleans - Here's the strangest thing: The New Orleans that people always came here to visit is still here, either virtually untouched or already renewed from relatively minor damage. I had a good time in New Orleans over four days. I ate well. I heard fabulous music. I grumbled to myself about the ridiculous August heat and humidity but bopped around town nevertheless. Other tourists appeared to do the same, but not many. On a normal summer pre-Katrina day, the city was never jammed because it's low season in hot weather; nowadays, the season is lower than ever. Still, the place is irresistible, heat or not. ... Read whole article on chicago tribune

Preserving the musical spirit of New Orleans - Six of the seven musicians lost their homes to the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina. A year after the storm, only two of the seven have been able to move back to New Orleans. Yet compared to many other New Orleans musicians, the members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band are the fortunate ones. They have work. ... Read whole article boston.com

Edge really picked up the ball, because Edge really wanted it to happen - When Lian Lunson started working on her Leonard Cohen film, she had no idea whether Cohen himself would agree to take part. She was, however, fairly confident that some friends of hers from Ireland would be happy to get involved. "I'm old friends with U2," she says, "I've known them for nearly 20 years, and I'd listened to endless conversations with them talking about Leonard Cohen, so I knew how much that he meant to them. So I called Bono first and said would you say some of those things that you said to me over the years in the film. So they said sure." But how did the Cohen-U2 performance come about? "After I'd filmed the concert and pretty much cut the film, I was having coffee with Leonard one day and I said it seems a little weird that I have all these people singing and I don't have you singing, and he said, but I don't have a band, and I was like well, I know a band. So I went home and called Bono and said Leonard Cohen might sing with you, and they were such big fans that they were like woah,we've got to make this work. "So I took Leonard to their gig in LA and introduced them, and he's a big fan of theirs, and Leonard just said I'm going to put this in your hands. Bono was very busy, I mean they were on tour and he had all these other things going on, but Edge really picked up the ball, because Edge really wanted it to happen. "He had the band rehearsing this song all across America, and then I took Leonard to New York. But Edge was the one that really made it happen."Edge even chose the song, and Lunson says Cohen very much enjoyed the experience of performing 'Tower of Song' with the band. Was he only joking, though, about the possibility of touring again? "Not necessarily," says Lunson, who still sees Cohen regularly. "It would be wonderful to see him on tour and it's something he's toying with... I think he will." Lian Lunson's next project, meanwhile, is a feature film about America's burlesque tradition with another of her ex-documentary subjects, Willie Nelson. Filming is due to begin in January. Read on Unison

20-year friendship with U2 which convinces Lunson - A woman who got Bono into Cohen's band - LIAN LUNSON: 'I wasn't interested in making an invasive film. I wanted people to come away with a real sense of him, rather than overloaded with all the personal information that distracts from the personality.' Top right: Lian with Bono at a showing of the film in the Toronto film festival.  ...  AFTER a considerable time, months of chat and then recording that chat, director Lian Lunson asked the man himself if he would sing for her film, Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man. ... The Australian-born director went home and rang Bono, the way you do. ... Smiling at how the septuagenarian Cohen makes Bono and the boys look like shovel-handed paddies playing at superstardom, and moist-eyed at the rare treat it is to see Cohen in action. ... Cohen had no band; she happened to know one. The fact that Cohen and U2 happen to be among the most enduring musicians of the past 50 years does not phase Lunson - a woman who does not question why things happen, but seems to know how to make them happen all the same. Lian Lunson's latest film - her third, all concerned with musicians - began as a documentary of the Came So Far for Beauty concert, which came to Dublin earlier this month. In 2005, organisers of the Sydney Arts Festival asked Lunson if she would make a documentary about the Hal Willner-produced concert, and it was Lunson's own idea to involve Leonard Cohen. Or at least try. ... It is, perhaps, her 20-year friendship with U2 which convinces Lunson of that. She has been friends with the band since they were making Rattle and Hum. "They're good friends, and then they have a huge group of friends here [in Ireland] who have become my friends, too," she says. "It's an instant gang and they're fantastic, and so I come here a lot." There won't be a Lian Lunson film exclusively with U2, however, though she has worked with them on several projects. "They're doing fine," Lunson smiles. "They don't need my help." Characteristic understatement, perhaps. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man opens on October 20 ... Unison

Lola Ca$$hman - SHE still hasn't found what she's looking for, but she's not giving up the ghost just yet. U2's former stylist Lola Cashman will make her long-awaited High Court challenge to the decision by a lower court that she must return items of wardrobe to the band, including a pair of Bono's trousers, on Tuesday. ... The band successfully sued Ms Cashman in the Circuit Court in June and July of last year over a pair of trousers, a sweatshirt, a Stetson hat and a pair of earrings that appeared for sale at Christies auction house in London. ... A jaded-looking Bono told the courtroom, packed with journalists and members of the legal profession eager to get a glimpse of the show, that the Stetson had taken on iconic status, and giving it away would be tantamount to the Edge giving away one of his guitars. ... Ms Cashman's High Court appeal is listed for this Tuesday. It is not yet known if members of U2 will appear on the day as they are on a world tour, with three Tokyo gigs scheduled for next month. Read whole article on Unison

It was a very 'punk rock' moment....

Edge was pumped...jumping! They were all great, the band had an amazing energy that night. Especially during the final encore - the band had so much fun during 'Fast Cars', with Edge dancing and Bono being ...with Alli onstage and 'Party Girl'... Bono clearly could not remember the lyrics, and was just laughing and getting help from the crowd. Then the champagne came out, and drenched those in the front row... so cool!! The 2nd version of 'Vertigo' was amazing! Bono was clearly in another place, and Edge was jumping around the stage like mad! At the end of that song, Edge was so pumped up that he just threw his guitar off, and let the feedback ring throughout MSG... It was a very 'punk rock' moment.... * Photo and comment about the show at MSG - october 14, 2005...a year ago...

Too Close For Conversation (Morleigh Steinberg)

(2002) 12min. Filmed and edited in Los Angeles, Too Close received its premiere at the Manchester Film Festival in 2002. A single entity floats weightless in womblike darkness. Tension builds, pulling flesh apart, dividing, until two bodies emerge. A Man and a Woman. What follows is their struggle to coexist. Dancing their world into existence, their movement conversation reflects their relationship, a longing to communicate, their closeness and their separateness. In the end, it takes a leap of faith to find each other again. Filmmaker: Morleigh Steinberg. Original music: Henry LeRoy Finch; Costumes: Roxanne Steinberg; Dancers: Mark DeChiazza and Kristen Hollinsworth. Watch a short clip here

New Orleans cop: No one wants to face the disaster James Hearty stands in his 9th Ward house, six months after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. In our Behind the Scenes series, CNN correspondents and producers share their experiences covering news.  -- New Orleans Reserve Police Officer James Hearty and I are walking through New Orleans' 9th Ward, and he's trying to explain what happened to his city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Few people can fathom how the city came apart in the floodwaters, how the police and other authorities struggled to bring order back in the midst of an apocalypse. ... All of the choices, the ambiguous situations, the thin line between hero and coward have taken a toll on Hearty. As he sits in front of his trailer in St. Bernard's Parish, he looks at me and says, "Don't ask me how morale is." So Katrina's burden is now on me and I have to make choices about whose story gets in the documentary and whose gets cut, whose pain and which injustice gets air time. We have a less than an hour. Hearty's story of conflicted heroism gets cut from the documentary for time. I, too, have to wonder if I left the wrong person behind. Read whole article on  cnn

From New Orleans to Shreveport, movie making picks up in La. - As New Orleans rolls out the red carpet for actor Ryan Phillippe and other Hollywood names in town for a Sunday screening, far-flung Shreveport is abuzz about the filming of an action comedy starring Antonio Banderas and Meg Ryan. New Orleans, with its foggy docks, sultry French Quarter and voodoo culture, has long been a center for moviemaking in Louisiana. But Hurricane Katrina made filmmakers look harder at the rest of the state. Some in the industry say options away from the coast will appeal to filmmakers skittish about bringing their business to Louisiana since the hurricane. The production crew for "Homeland Security," the Banderas movie being filmed in Shreveport, likes northwestern Louisiana so much they plan to return early next year to film a Samuel L. Jackson movie called "The Cleaner," said Heidi Jo Markel, one of the producers. "There's a certain amount of safety to filming in Shreveport and not having to deal with the ominous threat of hurricanes," she said. ... Last year, the state generated $500 million in film production, exceeding 2004's figures by more than $100 million even though hurricanes Katrina and Rita forced some filmmakers to suspend production or find alternate locations. State officials anticipate another $500 million year this year, even though recovery is not yet complete. Read whole article on dailycomet

The Saints are Coming - Live Version: (3:27) First Appears On: Rhapsody Music Service, 2006 - Written By: The Skids Performed By: U2 & Green Day Live 2006-09-27

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Superdome
It's been the ruin
Of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

I cried to my daddy on the telephone, “how long now?”
“Until the clouds unroll and you come home,” the line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent

I cried to my daddy on the telephone “How long now?”
“Until the clouds unroll and you come home” the line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent yeah, yeah

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

[Backing Oooh’s]
New birth, rebirth
Trombone Shorty

Living like birds in magnolia trees
A child on a rooftop
A mother on her knees
Her sign reads
Please, I am an American

Drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief, how long now
Until a weather change condemns belief, how long now
When the night watchman lets in the thief, what's wrong now

The Saints are Coming - Studio Version (3:22) First Appears On: The Saints are Coming Single, 2006 - Written By: The Skids Performed By: U2 & Green Day -

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin
Of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

I cried to my daddy on the telephone “how long now?”
“Until the clouds unroll and you come down,” The line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent

I cried to my daddy on the telephone “how long now?”
“Until the clouds unroll and you come home,” The line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent

Boom Cha Hey!

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

[Backing Oooh’s]
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief, how long now
Until a weather change condemns belief, how long now
When the night watchman lets in the thief, what's wrong now

Boom Cha Hey!

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply

...Window In The Sky...

It has recently been announced on U2.com that U2 will soon be releasing a third Best Of compilation. However, it will not follow the format of the previous two Best Ofs in covering a specific decade; it is intended to cover U2's entire career thus far and include sixteen of the band's most well-known and definitive singles. It will contain a total of eighteen tracks and will be called U218 Singles. No announcement has been made on which sixteen singles will be included, but the two bonus tracks will be from U2's recent recording session at Abbey Road, London with Rick Rubin. One is the studio version of the Skids' cover U2 recently performed with Green Day, The Saints Are Coming, while the other is a brand new U2 song titled Window In The Sky. The release date of the compilation will be in the second half of November, but differs slightly between markets. It will be released on 17 November in some European markets, 20 November in many locations worldwide such as Australia, and 21 November in North America. As has become normal with U2's recent releases, multiple formats will be available. As well as a CD release, U218 Singles will also be released on vinyl, and a DVD under the same name featuring video clips will be available. Furthermore, a deluxe edition of the CD release will be available; it will come with a DVD containing 10 songs performed in Milan on the Vertigo Tour last year.

...A limited version will contain 10 live tracks from a Milan concert. blogs. USA today

I cried to my daddy on the telephone/How long now?/Until the clouds unroll and you come home - ARTIST: U2 & GREEN DAY / SINGLE: THE SAINTS ARE COMING (Interscope/Reprise) / "There is a house in New Orleans," Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong sings softly over weeping keyboards, but it's only a prelude to the bigger bang: a cover of "The Saints Are Coming" by Scottish punk band the Skids. Performed live at the Louisiana Super Dome reopening, the merger of two rock giants launches a spine-tingling avalanche of spiky guitars and crashing drums, with a riff that feels like a high-speed echo of U2's "I Will Follow." One year after Katrina, the 1978 lyric delivers a fresh sting: "I cried to my daddy on the telephone/How long now?/Until the clouds unroll and you come home," Bono duets with Armstrong. Proceeds go to the hurricane charity Music Rising. yahoo

Utility May Get $200 Million Katrina Aid - Hoping to avoid a stifling increase in electricity and natural gas bills for New Orleans residents and businesses battered by Hurricane Katrina, a state board Thursday recommended that $200 million in federal aid be given to bankrupt utility Entergy New Orleans Inc. Even with the injection of federal dollars the company still is likely to seek rate increases that could raise electric and gas bills by 50 percent, Entergy chief executive Dan Packer said after the vote by the Louisiana Recovery Authority. ... Cruise business revving up in New Orleans - The answer to a big question -- the future of New Orleans' cruise ship industry -- will begin to unfold Sunday when the first regularly scheduled liner to sail since Hurricane Katrina leaves the city's docks. Before Katrina, four cruise ships were homeported in New Orleans. The industry was rapidly expanding, with more than 700,000 passengers leaving and arriving in 2004 through the Port of New Orleans. ... cnn

Spanish-Speakers Migrate to New Orleans - Daniel Flores, a native Honduran and newcomer to the New Orleans area, leaves the grousing about the pace of hurricane recovery to others. From his perspective, the post-Katrina saga is one of remarkable progress and considerable hope.  He was a teenager in Honduras when Hurricane Mitch devastated that country in 1998. He witnessed the destruction and joined his Boy Scout troop in helping to rescue people from inundated neighborhoods. Eight years later, survivors of Mitch still live in the streets in Honduras, he said. ... newhousenews

Cheney heads for New Orleans after touting Bush record - Vice President Dick Cheney headed for New Orleans on Thursday, where he was to visit the port and also meet privately with fellow Republicans. Earlier Thursday, Cheney visited Topeka, Kan., to help raise money and boost Rep. Jim Ryun's re-election campaign. Cheney touched on themes he has used in speeches in other states, suggesting that a Democratic-controlled Congress would allow tax cuts championed by President Bush to lapse and would adopt a ‘‘strategy of resignation and defeatism'' abroad. ... According to figures released today, the total cost of putting on the series of shows across the globe in July was over $15 million but raised around $20.6 million. The profit, which amounts to £2.7 million, is expected to be used as part of the ongoing effort to mobilise the G8 countries into recognising and addressing the issue of African poverty. Madonna, Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, U2, Scissor Sisters, Coldplay and a reformed Pink Floyd were amongst the performers at the London leg of Live 8 in Hyde Park. Live 8 took place on July 2, 2005, and was organised by Bob Geldof. yahoo

Bono, Christy and Bush

When President Bush arrived in Marine One at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, he was greeted by rock star Bono, model Christy Turlington and Bobby Shriver, who runs an organization called DATA -- or Debt, AIDS and Trade in Africa. The three were in Chicago to attend an AIDS event. Turlington and Bono, who has been active in raising awareness of poverty and AIDS, climbed the stairs of Air Force One with the president. Bono flashed a peace sign before the group went in the plane for a 10-minute conversation with Bush about AIDS. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey and humanitarian rocker Bono hit the city's ''Magnificent Mile'' on Thursday for a shopping spree to promote a new line of clothing, accessories and gadgets, including a special-edition iPod, that will raise money to fight AIDS in Africa. Bono, who knows the difficulties of raising awareness for social causes, was thrilled with the retailers' efforts for the campaign. Gap had its four-story store in Chicago decked out in red banners. Apple planned to light up its flagship 5th Avenue store in New York in red on Thursday night. ''We've moved from the philanthropy budgets to the marketing budgets, and guess what, there's no comparison in size,'' Bono said. ''We now have some of the most creative people in commerce -- Steve Jobs, the marketing people at Gap and Motorola -- all working for the world's poor. That is so so cool.'' Read on suntimes.com

"Kids, just like you, they can't get the medicines that we can get over here" ... "So we're going to get them the medicines. Is that good?" (Bono to a little 6 years-old girl) - Like two best friends on a shopping date, Oprah and Bono hit North Michigan Avenue Thursday morning, turning heads and stunning fans as they zipped in and out of stores. "So, wow, this is the Magnificent Mile," the U2 frontman marveled to Winfrey as they walked together in a freakish October snow, each clutching packed shopping bags. "Here we come, walking down the street, get the funniest looks from . . ." Bono sang, doing a Monkees impersonation. The high-wattage shopping spree was taped to air on Winfrey's talk show today. Winfrey is lending her support to the Product Red campaign led by Bono and Kennedy clan member Bobby Shriver. The effort sends proceeds from certain products to fight AIDS in Africa. Bono will help launch the U.S. version of the campaign on Winfrey's show. On Thursday, he and Winfrey stopped in at participating Michigan Avenue stores: Gap, Apple, Armani and Motorola. Along the way, they teamed up with other celebs helping the cause: Chicago-raised hip-hop star Kanye West, actress Penelope Cruz and supermodel Christy Turlington. The Gap at Michigan and Ohio was Bono and Winfrey's first stop. With Winfrey behind the wheel and Bono riding shotgun, they pulled up in a cherry red Ford Thunderbird to a chilly but roaring crowd. ... What's it like to shop with Bono? "It's, it's," Winfrey said, apparently fishing for the right word, "euphoric." Read on suntimes

For every 10 songs I write there's probably only one that will end up going anywhere

The Edge says he does write on the road but he's not as focused as when he's in one place. "I do, but for every 10 songs I write there's probably only one that will end up going anywhere," he said. "To start really getting into the material for the next record, it's going to take a lot of time off the road. There's a couple of things that I've done that I hear (and think). 'That's special, that's going to make the next record,' but I'd still need some time off, I think, to make a great U2 record." - Jam - september 2005. (larger size - photo, here)

AFTER KATRINA - Loss of jobs in New Orleans may leave it decades behind - Study says rest of state recovering in employment - Adding 96,000 new jobs to Louisiana over the next two years would normally be growth to take note of, but even if that happens, the state will only be back to its 1998 employment level, while New Orleans will be almost three decades further behind — thanks to Hurricane Katrina. That's the conclusion of an annual study released Wednesday by a group of state economists who pointed out that although most of Louisiana already is above pre-Katrina job levels, the losses in the New Orleans metropolitan area will still be dragging down the entire state — perhaps for years. ... 33 Katrina victims still unidentified -  The bodies of 65 Hurricane Katrina victims remain unclaimed by family members more than a year after the storm, and three dozen are still unidentified, the Orleans Parish coroner said Thursday. In all, more than 1,300 bodies were collected in Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita battered the region last year. Of those, 33 remain unidentified as investigators exhaust DNA and other tests, said coroner Frank Minyard. "It's getting tougher," he said. The bodies are being stored in refrigerated trailers and a warehouse near the Louisiana Superdome. Minyard said there are no plans to bury the unclaimed remains for at least another year. He said he hopes that a Katrina memorial will eventually be built to remember the tragedy and provide a final resting place for the bodies that haven't been identified or claimed. syracuse.com

In the ravaged Lower 9th Ward, once-shattered churches are rising from the ruin - Seventy-five people gathered in bright sunshine Sunday outside Reaping the Harvest Full Gospel Baptist Church and applauded as the Rev. Troy Lawrence, resplendent in a three-piece gray pinstriped suit, cut a red ribbon and, for the first time since Hurricane Katrina, led his flock into the completely refurbished building, singing "We've Come This Far by Faith." Three days earlier, the Rev. Joel Tyler sat at a folding metal table inside Second Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. The little red brick building is a raw, skeletal hulk: bare concrete floor, no power, no water, no furniture. Don Ford-Pollard and Mervin Duplessis sat across from him, flipping through their Bibles as Tyler led a congregation of two through a weekday Bible study. ... Read whole article on nola

We must have our childrens into the heart!

=+
Today is the Childrens´d Day in my country (also, is the day of our Patron-Saint, named Nossa Senhora Aparecida; and I remember in this exact day, in 1988, Sting spoke a part of our new Constituition, at that time, to protect the Brazilian-Indians, and I was at the attendance during that show). So I wish for all the childrens a great life, with health, peace, dreams, love, hope, harmony. I wish all the dads and mums could have the tranquility to think in the future, as Edge says about THE FUTURE, that IS BETTER! Watch, "An Cat Dubh-Into The Heart" from Chicago, may 10, 2005; an awesome attitude to take with the childrens, is Bono travelling to kid´s world, having Edge´s guitar at back, so sweet, calm and full of love, totally generous on youtube. Bono and Oprah in Michigan Avenue with a thunderbird: it´s RED

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey and rock star Bono of U2 caused quite a stir at the Michigan Avenue Gap Thursday morning. The two helped launch a new line of clothing and accessories that will raise money to fight AIDS in Africa. A huge crowd gathered to see the duo arrive around 11 a.m. Bono rode shotgun and then jumped out of the bright red Thunderbird to open the door for Oprah, who drove. The two shopped inside Gap, which was closed to the public, for about 15 minutes and left with bags filled with items from Product Red. They will be available to the public Friday at Gap stores.  The pair then walked down Michigan Avenue to the Apple Store and picked up a new red I-Pod, which Winfrey calls "amazing." That's where ABC7 caught up with Bono. He spoke about the projects that help in the fight against AIDS in Africa. "It is Gap, Armani, Apple, Motorola. These red phones are beautiful," said Bono. Minutes later they hopped back in the Thunderbird and took off. Look for some great photos and a video on abclocal * chicago tribune

U2’s “Until the End of the World” ... Bomp-ba-bomp, bomp, a-bomp-bomp. It’s the often-used musical foundation for songs great and awful, classic (“Willie & the Hand Jive”) and modern (U2’s “Until the End of the World”), across all styles - even the new-wave Smiths. Bo Diddley might not have created that rhythmic cadence - the initial beat often is attributed to “hambone,” in which slaves deprived of percussion slapped their chests and thighs - but it was the first beam on his bridge from blues to rock ’n’ roll. Many other conductors have commandeered that choo-choo chug - Diddley, dubbed “The Originator,” was its original rock ’n’ roll engineer. ... sj-r.com

Edge won the auction ($11,000) and his own got the highest bid...everything to support children´s lunch programs

Get your hand-created, one-of-a-kind lunchbox and support a great cause! 100 top celebrities in entertainment, fashion, art, music, literary and culinary worlds have designed lunchbox art to benefit children´s lunch programs. The Food Bank for New York City is the city´s primary supplier of food for the hungry and helps provide over 240.000 free meals served each day - one out of four children in New York City depend on the Food Bank for meals. The Lunchbox Fund, founded in 2004, is a non-profit organization that provides lunch to children in schools in South Africa who would otherwise go without sustenance. Many of these children are AIDS orphan who are running child-headed households, and who cannot afford to pay their basic school fees of $15 per day. THE EDGE, won the auction for a lunchbox designed by former US President BILL CLINTON for $11,000 (GBP6,100) MARTIN BEATS BONO TO STIPE'S LUNCHBOX - CHRIS MARTIN outbid BONO to win a lunchbox designed by REM frontman MICHAEL STIPE at a charity auction in New York City at the end of last week (ends14OCT05). Martin's bid of $20,000 (GBP11,100) proved too much for the U2 star to meet at the Wooster Projects Gallery event to raise funds for the Food Bank For New York City and The Lunchbox Fund. A disappointed Bono quipped, "It was death by Coldplay!" However, Bono's U2 bandmate, THE EDGE, won the auction for a lunchbox designed by former US President BILL CLINTON for $11,000 (GBP6,100). Among the other celebrities in attendance at the opening Thursday (13OCT05) night gala were NAOMI CAMPBELL, ALICIA KEYS, MIKE MYERS, CHARLIZE THERON and MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL. The more-than 100 stylised lunchboxes were contributed by stars including Myers, Theron, CLINT EASTWOOD, BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE.  The Edge's lunchbox had the highest bid of all of them. New Orleans flight problems hurt tourism - Lack of airline flights in and out of New Orleans prompted Microsoft to cancel three meetings expected to bring a total of 30,000 people to New Orleans next year. They had been planned as the first meetings in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina for Microsoft, which has held several worldwide events bringing 14,000 people each to the city since 2002. The company worked closely with the city to try to keep the meetings there and support New Orleans' recovery, but finally decided it would be too difficult for employees and business associates to travel there, Microsoft spokeswoman Robyn Kratzer said. "It was going to present some very challenging logistical problems," she said. Two of the meetings were expected to bring 14,000 people each, and the third 2,000. Service at Louis Armstrong International Airport is 61% of what it was before the storm, but the airport has been able to get extra flights for other special events, spokeswoman Michelle Duffourc said. Continental Airlines has been particularly willing to put larger aircraft on its flights or schedule extra flights to the city when needed, she said. However, nobody from Microsoft or the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau asked the airport to help keep the conventions, she said. "That is really not true," convention bureau spokeswoman Mary Beth Romig said. She said the Microsoft meetings and their dates were mentioned "some time ago" during the bureau's continuing talks with the airport about flight problems. About Microsoft's decision, she said: "Of course we are sorry they changed their mind. We are continuing to work with them for future dates in future years." USA today

Land Lost: Hurricanes Katrina and Rita turned 217 square miles of coastal land and wetlands into water - Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ripped away 217 square miles of Louisiana's fragile coastline, with each turning huge swaths of land to water overnight, accelerating a process that already posed grave threats to coastal communities, according to a new U.S. Geological Survey study. Survey scientists compared satellite images taken in 2004 with similar images from October 2005 to match areas that were wetlands, undeveloped dry land and farmland with what looked like open water several weeks after the storms. The survey underscores the state's repeated demands that federal officials speed efforts to rebuild the Louisiana coastline, both to protect fragile fisheries and wildlife and to augment the buffer of plants, soils and barrier islands that can slow the approach of killer storm surges. ... Teachers in short suply, stress plentful in New Orleans schools - In a dimly lit auditorium at Rabouin High School, more than 100 students who are supposed to be in class cruise the aisles and socialize under the gaze of security guards. A month into the new school year, there aren't enough teachers or substitutes to keep all classrooms staffed in New Orleans' public schools. The students in the auditorium don't lack just teachers. Enrolled at Reed High School, these students also are without a campus until renovation of their flooded school is complete. The Reed students are bused to Rabouin and use the building from 7 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Rabouin then takes over its campus until 7:30 p.m. ``It's unfortunate," Reed Principal Daniel Hudson said of the students in the auditorium. "I don't like to do that. But I can only do what I can do." Bono introducing RED to US - The lead singer of legendary band U2 will be a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show this Friday to help introduce RED to the United States. RED, an initiative co-founded by Bono, promotes the idea that ‘what we buy can change the world'. Its aim is to raise money for the Global Fund by teaming up with the world’s most iconic brands including Armani, Converse, GAP, and Motorola. Hollywood stars Jennifer Garner, Penelope Cruz and Don Cheadle are among the celebrities who will parade GAP clothes in a series of advertising campaigns for the charity. Half the proceedings of purchases will go to RED, which will then donate funds to poverty-stricken Africans affected by HIV/AIDS.  Oscar-nominated actor Cheadle says, "People can wear the clothes and know that they are actually doing something for the world. It's a great way to merge fashion and activism." Bono is the founder of the ONE campaign, which aims to fight against poverty and AIDS. In August, US Megachurch pastor Bill Hybels received a phone message from Bono, who was aiming to "vision-cast" the churches and wake them up to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Ever since the rock star took a Live Aid trip to Ethiopia two decades ago and revisited the questions raised then on poverty and disease, he's been on a mission to get the world and especially the churches on board to fix what is "fixable", as Bono said. He pondered, how come churches aren't getting on board with the greatest social cause of the day? Bono himself has been using his celebrity influence to bring attention to the heart-wrenching scene in Africa. "Music is my first love," he told Hybels, thanking God for his gift. A melody playing in his head inspires him to get up every morning. Bono pointed out another reason that gets him up each day: the ONE Campaign. The campaign, voiced by a host of celebrities with Bono as the leading man, as well as faith communities, was launched to mobilise Americans for the cause of poverty and HIV/AIDS. Calling the "celebrity" thing "ridiculous", Bono plainly stated, "I'm a rock star ... but I have a head for the world's poor." From Christian today

Music Rising is amazing...the music brings 'life, work and people back in that city'! Go and support Edge´s Music Rising to New Orleans and area, here

It was a beautiful day

Edge looked my way and raise the book in the air! "...About 4 pm I made my way back to MSG (Madison Square Garden) entrance to where the band would come in. I had just missed Larry by 5 mins. Since there were less than dozen fans, I was able to stand next to the railing. About 15 mins later a black town car pulled in the driveway. Its back windows were darkened, so you couldn't see who was inside. But 5 mins later, the car backs up and the bodyguard gets out with an umbrella and then...out comes Edge! He shook a few hands. Someone asked him about posing and he said that he couldn't pose, they would have to snap away. As he got closer to me, I began to slightly panic because the book, wrapped in clear plastic, wouldn't come out of the damn book bag I had it in. I thought geez, I'm this damn close and Edge is going to passed me by. Luckily, someone else next to me was having her on moment of trying to find paper for Edge to autograph. By the time he was in front of me I had the book in my hands and I said, "I don't want anything from you, I just want to give you this. It's a gift." He said, "Awww, thank you", and stuck his hand out to shake it. I shook it. I think I said you're welcome and smiled but I can't remember. He went back down the line shaking hands and signing autographs. As he made his way back to the car, a chorus of "thank you" arose and I wave my hands. Edge looked my way and raise the book in the air. He got in the car and it pulled in the underground garage...."it was a beautiful day"." by U2´s fan Cassandra - october 2005.  Look for Edge and Bono in New Orleans on september, here

Soon you'll know what street you're on in New Orleans - NEW ORLEANS Street signs are being restored in New Orleans, another sign of recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The city estimates that nearly 20-thousand signs need to be replaced, everything from one-way signs to street names to parking zones. The work will continue into spring. The signs either were destroyed by floodwaters that swamped the city after the August 2005 storm or in the aftermath and cleanup. But figuring out where those signs go may pose a challenge. The city's public works director says the city had an inventory of its stop signs, but nothing else except ordinances, to suggest where speed limit or other signs may have been posted. The New Schools Venture Fund website:  "Creating a New Public Education System: Entrepreneurs in New Orleans - In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the city of New Orleans is engaged in a massive re-building effort. A crucial piece of this is the building of a new public education system, replacing a district that foundered for years before the storm. In the midst of this complicated scenario, education entrepreneurs are creating both new systems of charter schools and the infrastructure necessary to support those schools in serving the students of New Orleans. In this session, three Crescent City entrepreneurs will share both the current status of their organization and their aspirations. These panelists will also highlight the human, financial and political resources they need to build organizations that can deliver a high-quality public education to New Orleans’ students." Bono. Oprah. House Parties. Oh My! This week, the world’s biggest brands will throw their advertising muscle and millions of dollars in sales into the fight against global AIDS and extreme poverty. This same week thousands of ONE members will meet in living rooms and places of worship across the country to discuss global poverty in this election. This is going to be a good week. Sign up to attend an October 15th House Party in your area or host one of your own. This Friday, Bono will be a guest on Oprah to help introduce (Product) RED to the United States. (RED) is the simple idea that what we buy can change the world. It’s not a charity. It’s a brand created to raise money for the Global Fund by teaming up with the world’s most iconic brands including Armani, Converse, GAP, and Motorola. Every (RED) product will raise not only money, but awareness. On Sunday, ONE members are hosting house parties in preparation for the November election. Thousands of ONE members are coming together to celebrate the launch of (Product) RED, to add an entry to the Guinness Book of World Records for “the most people standing up” against poverty, and to call their candidates’ campaign offices to find out what they have done and what they plan to do to support the fight. A crisis of this scale needs to be fought on multiple fronts to take advantage of the unique strengths of different parts of society. We need to gang up on the problem and this week is an important opportunity to come together. Please sign up to attend an October 15th House Party in your area or host one of your own. This week, there are three things I am going to do: watch Bono introduce (Product) Red on Oprah Friday, wear a (Product) RED t-shirt (but not all weekend), and attend an October 15th ONE House Party. I hope you will join me, because we can make this an important moment for the global poverty movement. From: One.org

MAKE MINE RED - Converse announces that it is expanding www.converseone.com, the company's renowned web location where consumers can customize their own original Converse product to include a MAKE MINE RED option. Converse is the only (PRODUCT) RED partner with this exclusive capability to give consumers a platform to express their creativity through (PRODUCT) RED. ... Read whole article on yahoo

Edge at Economic´s leture in NYC, last year

Look for larger version here - "We're back to being a warm-up act, Edge" - A crowd about 50 students was waiting eagerly near the entrance of New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts the evening of Oct. 5, when a shiny black SUV pulled up. Out stepped Bono, the lead singer of rock band U2 and arguably the world's most accomplished celebrity advocate for the poor, sick, and hungry. ... "WARM-UP ACT." Only this wasn't a rock concert. It was an economics lecture. And Bono wasn't even the main attraction. "We're back to being a warm-up act, Edge," Bono called out from the stage to U2's knit cap-wearing guitarist, The Edge, who was sitting sedately in the audience. ...

Rhythms del Mundo (I Still Haven´t Found...)This fall, environmental nonprofit organization Artists' Project Earth (APE) will be raising funds to stop climate change by releasing Rhythms Del Mundo, an album of collaborative tracks that fuses the Latin sounds of Buena Vista Social Club with some of the hottest acts in Western pop. The project evolved when more environmental disasters struck," notes Young. "You can call these natural disasters, but after all the research and scientific data, we know that we're at least partly to blame for some of these disasters. Business...

"... Partridge presses Bill Stewart, Island's A&R head, to offer U2 a deal. Annie Roseberry and two publishing executives from the company's publishing arm, Blue Mountain Music, fly to Belfast to see the band in action at Queen's University. At a later show, Feb. 26, 1980 at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin, U2 is offered a deal by Stewart. The band is triumphant and has every right to be. Island boss Chris Blackwell is a very astute businessman and legendary for his ear for a song and his eye for a band—he is also keen to sign U2. On March 23, 1980 the contracts are finally exchanged, rumor has it, in the ladies toilet of London's Acklam Hall/Lyceum. The deal is for four albums over the next four years. During the first 12 months Island will issue three U2 singles and the band's debut album with a reported advance of $50,000, including recording costs and a further $50,000 for tour support. Island will have world rights for U2 excluding Ireland, where the band will stay with CBS. Although the advance is not large, the conviction and enthusiasm shown for the band by Island's staff more than makes up for the shortfall. To complete the package, McGuinness signs the band's publishing to Blackwell's own Blue Mountain Music. U2 is finally in business." by Regina O'Numb here

And while much of the damage was the result of the Hurricane itself, Brinkley makes it clear that the negligence and inaction of a variety of parties, including the Mayor of New Orleans, the Governor of Louisiana and President Bush also played a role. ... The Song They Wish They'd Written (...Wonderwall...) and VOTE FOR U2 - Larry cites Block Rockin' Beats by The Chemical Brothers. Adam cites Back to LIfe by Soul II Soul. Edge cites Wonderwall by Oasis. Bono cites ... er... seven tracks by seven artists. To mark twenty years of Q Magazine the band are on the cover of the British music monthly (one of twenty covers with twenty artists) and looking back over two decades. In 1986 Larry recalls driving a green Land Rover, Edge an 'ivory 1969 Triumph Herald', Adam ' a Maserati Ghibli... or it may have been my Golf' and Bono had 'just bought a hearse for spare parts'. Adam thinks the first album he bought on CD may have been 'Songs to Learn & Sing' by Echo & The Bunnymen, Larry recalls buying Aja by Steely Dan, Edge bought Midnight Love by Marvin Gaye and Bono can't remember the first CD but says Santana's Abraxas was the first album he bought. As for the songs he wishes he'd written, Bono lists: 'Brownsville Girl, Bob Dylan and Sam Shepard; Unfinished Sympathy, Massive Attack; Live Forever, Oasis; The Last Song I'll Ever Sing, Gavin Friday; Lucky Man, The Verve; Almighty Love, Emm Gryner.' More on Q at 20 here. By the way, voting is still open in the Q Awards - your chance to nominate the 'Best Live Act' and 'Best Act in the World Today'. Who might that be then? Mercury

U2 to split from Island Records After 26 years and global sales of around 150 million albums, U2, arguably the world's biggest band, have quit the record label that discovered them. Insiders claimed yesterday that the band's members, led by Bono, became fed up with the Island Records' senior management's "hands-off" approach towards them, despite their having generated hundreds of millions of pounds for the label. Friends said yesterday that the final straw came during a recent recording session in London. While Bono and the band worked on new tracks to add to their latest "Best of" compilation, no one from Island Records dropped by to meet them. One observer claimed this "put their noses out of joint" and did nothing to help the deteriorating relationship. Their closest ally at the label, the former general manager Jason Iley, was appointed managing director of Mercury Records last year, and the band have now followed him there. U2 have frequently said they owe their career to Island and that its founding boss, Chris Blackwell, was instrumental to their career. No other label had shown any interest in giving them a deal when the band were signed in 1980. Despite leaving Island, the band will remain within the Universal Music Group. The first release on the new label will be a charity single next month. INDEPENDENT Read here

... No comment from the band today, but it's thought the reason they have decided to leave their long standing home is due to the fact they want to remain with Mercury President Jason Iley. He was working for Island but left last May with his team including A&R manager Richard O'Donovan. ... BBC

Toronto has its CN Tower and New York its Empire State Building. Now Dublin is about to join the skyscraper club with the U2 Tower, a 130-metre building to be named after the Irish rock band. The tower will bring new meaning to the U2 hit Vertigo, with a recording studio for the band on the top floor. The project has been designed by Irish architects Burdon Craig Dunne Henry, who won an international competition with their twisting 30-storey design. Described as like a "Brancusi sculpture," it will be the tallest building in Dublin when it is completed in 2009, and is expected to become a landmark. However, the distinctive tower will be nowhere near large enough to be counted among the world's tallest buildings. Three Canadian architecture firms — Andritsos/Luke, Brown + Storey and Kearns Mancini — entered the competition, which drew bids from around the world. The project, to be built on docklands in south Dublin, will have 182 apartments selling for 1-1.5 million euros ($1.4-2.1 million). A recording studio for U2, with views of the city and the ocean, will be in a penthouse at the top. Bono and the band will have a dedicated elevator to take them between the studio and the café and terrace on the ground floor. U2 already own a hotel in their home city, and band members have invested in real estate in Dublin. Read here

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day - Access to Care for All ... This year's theme, Access to Care for All, is a reminder that millions of people who desperately need care at the end of life are not getting it. Noted celebrities Bono and Sir Elton John have given their support to World Day efforts.  On the World Day Web site, Bono states, "In the poorest countries, where so many people are fighting for their lives, the conditions of death don't get much of a look in. But how we care for the sick and dying is surely a litmus test of our humanity. Just as we fight for equality in life, we should fight for equality in death." ... Read whole article here

Edge and Bono taping HBO interview in NYC, by U2´s fan De Vaul (its supposed to air on HBO - november 24th) -  "... What an amazing day. We were instructed to pick up tickets at Mo Pitkins on Ave A. From there, we were given wristbands and directions to Joe's Pub, where the taping was to occur. I hustled my arse down there ASAP, and ended up being the 6th person in line. The only gent. Oh well, no complaints! We waited for awhile, many of us escaping the line to hit the restroom at Starbucks. The bathroom line was longer than the coffee line and moving three times slower. Oh well, a quick leak and back to standing outside Joe's. They let us in and sat us down. Dave Stewart (of The Eurythmics) is hosting a show on HBO, interviewing songwriters about the stories behind their songs - the ideas, gestation, development in the studio, etc. Bono & Edge came out (to rapturous applause by an incredibly excited room of lucky fans) and traded stories & jokes with Dave; we were allowed to call out some song names and the boys told us about writing and recording them. We got let out a little before 5 ("be available til 4"? riiiight), and a few of us waited for autographs outside. The Edge got into his car around 5:30 and left without stopping. Hearts sank. There was audible sighing. Right around 6, Bono got in his car. As it rolled alongside us waiting fans, we waved but he wasn't looking back at us. Then, the car stopped. Bono got out! Mine was the first hand he shook. He signed my copy of Boy, took pictures and gave autographs to the other folks there. What a completely humble and decent gentleman! ... No performance, just discussion. Unless you count an acapella rendition of a few lines of "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad" a performance. ..."

A common thing among people who start a rock band

 (larger size, here)

"We really did need the publicity. [Laughs.] I don't know, the book idea ... it just felt right somehow. Then we got into it and realized it was actually a big commitment, going through scrapbooks and memories. But it turned out well. ... I wouldn't say a concern, but looking back I was like, Wow! That was a weird phase! As Bono says, the stage is like a giant platform shoe, and we all have reasons we end up in bands. For me, my awkward phase corresponded to an interest in rock 'n' roll. From experience, I'm guessing an insecure childhood is probably quite a common thing among people who start a rock band." by Edge (on the book and on his childhood) from U2byU2 - source: Time.com

They feel the political system hasn’t served them at all

 (larger size here)

Edge has been tireless and eloquent in this cause. In May, while in New Orleans for Jazz Fest, he was aghast at the lack of progress in the Lower Ninth Ward, where only one of 100 churches was operating. He told me, “I sense that politicians consider those places marginal areas. It’s important to get the churches up and running. The French Quarter is not the heart of the city. New Orleans music comes from the churches and back parlors in those neighborhoods. People there are very frustrated. They feel the political system hasn’t served them at all.” from USAtoday

Amazing rehearsal: Met Dallas, Bono, Edge and Larry (Superdome)

(larger size: here and here) "... I saw Larry walking outside his hotel and got a sort of smile/grimace in return for my smile. ... I saw were Adam, Edge, and Dallas!!!! When we got closer I couldn't help but scream out "Dallas!" He looked surprised, looked around and I screamed it again and waved with my whole body. He saw me, waved, and continued with his conversation with someone. When we were asked to get even closer to the stage a few minutes or so later...I think...minutes have melted together...Dallas walks off the stage, walks right over to me with his hand held out, and reach for him, and he gives me an Edge Vertigo pic. I was floored. My heart swelled. I just couldn't believe it. First thing I thought was OMG no wonder that the fruitcakes can't get over this guy. Hee hee. Anytime we had eye contact after that he held out his arm to me just to connect. I called out to Bono, but he couldn't find me easily. LOL. I had to call Adam two times before he was able to see me, smile and wave, and then to the Edge but he was into something with Dallas. ... Bono was doing a fun little dance too ... out comes Dallas and all of the techs. ... then asked for a favor. "Irene, will you please do something for me?" Sure. "I have a fanclub...." I told him I knew about it but wasn't in it yet...understood why he had one though...."..I have a lot of my plate....very busy...always with the Edge...will you please tell them 'Thank you' for me? I just can't get in there and respond to them...please just tell them thank you." ... out came the Edge rolling right towards me. I called out to him, he kept going right by and towards his truck. I grabbed his attention again, started saying thanks for all of his hard work for NOLA....still didn't feel the connection...until I said that I was on the Music Rising boards....with Sammi, Regina, and everyone wanting to keep things going. He gave me the thumbs up, signed my jacket, and went his way. ... Next came Bono being swept away by a large group of followers...who knows who they were. I walked right in front of them, said his name, and he came up to me, grabbed me, and gave me a big hug!!!!!!!!!! Oh my... couldn't even talk because...well, I just couldn't even talk....mumbled something about thanks for him being here...something about 24 years...thanks again while he's signing my jacket...and he says it's his pleasure as he walked into his truck. Some guy that was near me said I saw him kiss you. ... and then Larry cruises around the corner in his little cart. He gets out holding some box and walks in my direction. "Larry." He stopped without hesitation. "Thank you for being here...I live in Louisiana and it means a lot that you're here for the poeple." He looked at me and smiled, looked very happy to hear that....signed my jacket...I get to see what's inside the box. ..." Read whole review by Irene (Music Rising fragrant) here

Tickets in Japan to 'Vertigo' tour ... U2japan.com tell that general admission tickets to the three shows at Saitama Arena were not easy to obtain when they went on public sale in September. Fans had to compete with ticket brokers, which are numerous and very popular in Japan, to get the best tickets. General admission will be handled differently in Japan than anywhere else on the tour. General admission at Saitama Arena will be divided into three blocks: Blocks A, BL, and BR. In addition to a block number, all GA tickets include a position number — from 1 to 4,000. Fans will be granted entrance into the blocks in numerical order. The system sounds a bit crazy, but it does work to keep fans from rushing and crushing. ... source U2log

There is a house in New Orleans, they call the rising sun...

House Of The Rising Sun (The Animals) - There is a house in New Orleans / They call the Rising Sun / And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy / And God I know I'm one / My mother was a tailor / She sewed my new bluejeans / My father was a gamblin' man / Down in New Orleans / Now the only thing a gambler needs / Is a suitcase and trunk / And the only time he's satisfied / Is when he's on a drunk / Oh mother tell your children / Not to do what I have done / Spend your lives in sin and misery / In the House of the Rising Sun / Well, I got one foot on the platform / The other foot on the train / I'm goin' back to New Orleans / To wear that ball and chain / Well, there is a house in New Orleans / They call the Rising Sun / And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy / And God I know I'm one. Watch the video on youtube (thanks Malcom for the clue)

How much time to wait for...

This is a video of a 80's punk rock band from Brazil, called Plebe Rude. This song has many question about the poor people waiting for God´s support, while the bad distribution of the country´s wealth happens, while the govern don´t look for the poorest people (the plebe, that is an old folk expression which means the poorest). Watch 'Ate quando esperar' (How much time to wait for) on youtube . (I think this song is very appropriate to the people of New Orleans, as is to the people in Brazil)

'You know, good work never dies, it just goes to sleep for a while until somebody wakes it up'

"The Edge said something really beautiful to me," revealed Richard. "He said, 'You know, good work never dies, it just goes to sleep for a while until somebody wakes it up'. "That's all I needed to hear. It made me feel so proud." But Richard thought a mate was at the wind-up when the guitarist phoned to invite him down to Abbey Road studios in London to watch U2 and Green Day record the song. Richard said: "I was so sure somebody was taking the p***. I was saying, 'Yeah, right, okay, sure'." "The Edge was quite startled by how blase (impassive) I was. Then it began to dawn on me - with deep embarrassment - this WAS The Edge. "He was incredibly flattering about my lyrics. That's not something I've had much recognition for. "So to hear The Edge praise my words was a great validation of a song I'm very proud of." Richard -whose movies include Sixteen Years Of Alcohol and The Purifiers -added: "To watch both bands lay down the music was totally surreal. "Green Day are from a different generation to The Skids -I think they thought I was this strange old man sitting in the corner. But as soon as The Edge played them the song and suggested recording it, they got it first time." Richard was bowled over when he watched footage of the bands performing his song in the 70,000-capacity New Orleans Superdome last week. And what would his mate, the late Stuart Adamson have made of it all? Richard said: "Stuart was a very proud man. I'm sure wherever he is now - listening to the new version - he'll probably have a big smile on his face." by Richard Jobson about Edge ... The Saints Are Coming ... Sunday mail-october 1, 2006

Aaron Neville - Grief over the losses, gratitude for being spared and a desire to uplift those people trying rebuild their lives are all apparent. But it's nostalgia for pre-Katrina New Orleans that truly fuels Aaron Neville's eloquent new album "Bring It on Home . . . The Soul Classics." The Crescent City music great was in New York when the disaster struck last year. Due to doctor's orders concerning his asthma and his wife's cancer, Neville settled in Nashville and has no plans to revisit his demolished home or tour the destroyed households of two siblings and three of his children. But despite his conspicuous absence, the 65-year-old New Orleans native is with his hometown in spirit. He has been a part of numerous benefit concerts and "Bring It on Home" is dedicated to everyone "whose lives were forever changed by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina." The album features Neville channelling his pain through a collection of songs that have comforted the singer for nearly a half of century. The 12 tracks include timeless favorites like "Rainy Night in Georgia," "People Get Ready" and "My Girl" delivered with sensitivity, grace and aplomb. ... Read whole article here

How the punk anthem written in the bedroom of a Dunfermline teenager was recorded by U2 and Green Day as inspiring tribute to New Orleans - POP supergroups U2 and Green Day are heading for No.1 - with a song written 28 years ago by a pair of Scottish punk rockers in a Dunfermline bedsit. The track - The Saints Are Coming - was recorded to raise cash for Music Rising, a charity set up to aid musicians who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Irish band and US trio performed the song for the first time at a benefit gig to reopen the New L Orleans Superdome last week - marking the first home game of NFL side New Orleans Saints since the 2005 floods which claimed 1700 lives and left thousands homeless. But The Saints Are Coming was written as an anti-sectarian anthem by teenage musicians, singer Richard Jobson and guitarist Stuart Adamson of The Skids. Richard, now a successful film-maker, recalled the day he wrote the song with Stuart, who took his own life in 2001, aged 43.

He said: "It was written in Stuart's bedroom in Dunfermline and polished up in a garage we rehearsed in behind Queen Anne High School nearby."

"He didn't want to go down the mines in Fife. He was looking for a career and thought the Army would turn him into a car mechanic or an engineer. But within 20 weeks of basic training he was walking down a street in Northern Ireland with a rifle in his hand." Tragically, Richard's pal was shot dead in Belfast.

Richard added: "His partner had just had their first baby shortly before he got killed. The lyrics are written from the perspective of the kid trying to speak to him.

"Like us, he didn't want to be a part of all that sectarian stuff. In The Skids, I was a Catholic while the other three guys were Protestants - but it didn't matter to us." The track had been forgotten until U2 guitarist The Edge chose it as the anthem to spearhead the appeal aiming to raise cash to replace instruments lost in the floods.

I was saying, 'Yeah, right, okay, sure'."

Back to the future...Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans...

"Johnny B. Goode" a song by Chuck Berry that has come to be a universal anthem of rock'n'roll still played by popular musicans of all schools when they want to get the crowd going. Berry wrote the piece in 1955 and released it in 1958. It is a rock and roll telling of the America dream - a poor country boy from the backwoods has dreams of becoming a star by hard work and his skill at playing the guitar. Although partly autobiographal, the inspiration for the song is said to have been Johnnie Johnson who played the piano and composed several songs with Berry and is considered a major contributor to the unmistakable Berry sound. On earlier unreleased takes Chuck sang "colored boy" for "country boy", but the Chess-brothers decided that that would not sell. The song's impact on the rock 'n' roll world is immeasurable. Virtually every guitarist learns to play it early and its riffs and memorable guitar licks show up in the recordings of many of them later in their careers. Keith Richard of the Rolling Stones is the best-known example of this phenomenon. Berry later wrote a sequel song called "Bye Bye Johnny". In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Johnny B. Goode" at number 42 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. Rolling Stone ranked it as the seventh best song ever on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In the movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, performs this song at a high school dance where the original band's guitarist (named Marvin Berry) injures his hand. In the time-travel movie, Chuck Berry becomes inspired to write the song by Marvin, his cousin, who calls Chuck to hear the "new sound", which is of course Marty playing the song, heavy-metal-shredding style. The Lyrics: Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry, Back To The Future - Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans / Way back up on the woods among the evergreens / There stood an old cabin made of earth and wood / Where lived a country boy named Johnny B Goode / Who'd never ever learned to read or write so well / But he could play a guitar just like a ringin' a bell / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode! / He used to carry his guitar in a gurny sack / Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track / Old engineers in the train would see him sittin' in the shade / Strummin' with the rhythm that the drivers made / The people passed him by they would stop and say / Oh my but that little country boy could play / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode! / His mother told him someday you will be a man / And you will be the leader of a big old band / Many people comin' from miles around / To hear you play your music when the sun goes down / Maybe some day your name will be in lights / Sayin' "Johnny B Goode tonight" / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Go! Johnny! / Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode!" by Chuck Berry. Michael J. Fox playing Johnny B. Goode in Back To The Future, on youtube.
