White Riot by The Clash - Album:  The Clash - 1977 - U.K. Chart:  38 - This is inspired by the Notting Hill riots. On August 30, 1976, black youths clashed with Police at a carnival in the English town. Clash members Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, and their manager Bernie Rhodes were there and got caught up in the riots, taking a stand against the police. Strummer felt that young white people should express their outrage over oppressive government just as blacks were, through direct action and protest. The Clash's first single. It became one of their signature songs and was an indication of things to come. The Clash spent the next 8 years speaking out for the lower class and against the establishment. Targets of their scorn included the British government and their record company. The back cover of the album is a photo of the Notting Hill riots. The album wasn't released in the US until 1979. Over 100,000 copies were sold there as an import in 1977. Clash members Mick Jones and Joe Strummer played this together for the last time in November, 2002. Jones was in the audience for one of Strummer's solo shows and came onstage to join him. Strummer usually didn't like to play this, but he turned to Jones and said, "This one's in 'A', you know it." Strummer died of a heart attack a month later.

Lyrics for 'White Riot': White riot - I wanna riot / White riot - A riot of my own / White riot - I wanna riot / White riot - A riot of my own / Black people gotta lot a problems / But they don't mind throwing a brick / White people go to school / Where they teach you to be thick / And everybody's doing / Just what they're told to / And nobody wants / To go to jail /All the power's in the hands / Of people rich enough to buy it / While we walk the street / Too chicken to even try it / And everybody's doing / Just what they're told to / And nobody wants / To go to jail / Are you taking over / Or are you taking orders? / Are you going backwards / Or are you going forwards?

News from the NOLA's camp by fragrant: "...I listened to stories of the community there that tell of their wishes NOT to return to New Orleans. They want to stay clear of the crime and desperate situation, and want to do their best here. Recently there was a family who came to the Ren Village FROM New Orleans because they just couldn't take it anymore. It made me think about who will be bringing life back to NOLA...will those with the will be able to improve the conditions in the long term. It's good that these families feel comfort and safety in the Ren Village community, but then I would hope that there will be promise back in New Orleans for them one day." Bono seeks Obama's help - Presidential candidate Barack Obama discussed global issues with U2 singer Bono on Tuesday. The two met for about a half-hour in the Illinois senator's personal office in the Hart Senate building to talk about the ONE Campaign, a non-profit organization that the Irish rock star helped form to combat AIDS and world poverty, according to Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for Obama. "Bono was making rounds on the Hill to build support for the ONE campaign. He particularly wanted to meet with Sen. Obama since he's a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and has been active on international poverty and global health issues," LaBolt said. LaBolt said the two did not discuss particular programs or legislation but "had a general discussion about how foreign assistance to the right programs [anti-poverty, global health] can boost our security and the standing of the U.S. around the world." chicagotribune

Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by The Clash - Album:  London Calling - 1979 - U.S. Chart:  27 - The words "Train in Vain" are never sung. The predominant lyric is "Stand By Me," but that's the title of a famous song by Ben E. King. The title comes from the train rhythm in the song combined with the theme of being lost. The song deals with loyalty as the singer asks a girl to stand by him. This appears as a hidden track on the album. It is not listed and fades in after the last song, "Revolution Rock," is done. It is rumored that it was not listed on the album because it was included at the last minute and they didn't have time to redo the packaging. When the CD was reissued in 2000, it was listed. According to NME magazine (3/16/91), this isn't listed on the sleeve credits for London Calling because it was originally going to be a flexi give-away with NME magazine. Unfortunately, the idea proved too expensive and the track went on the album instead. Clash guitarist Mick Jones sang lead on this. He is a different person than the Mick Jones from Foreigner. This was the first US Top 40 hit for The Clash. They had only one more - "Rock The Casbah" in 1982. The album cover was designed as a tribute to Elvis Presley's first album. The words "London" and "Calling" are displayed the same way "Elvis" and "Presley" were on his 1956 debut. Instead of a photo of Elvis, however, the text frames a shot of Clash bass player Paul Simonon smashing his bass during a show at The Palladium in New York. That bass is now in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Lyrics for: Train in Vain (Stand By Me): You say you stand by your man / Tell me something, I don't understand / You said you loved me and that's a fact / And then you left me said you felt trapped / Well some things you can't explain away / But the heartache's in me till this day / You didn't stand by me / No not at all / You didn't stand by me / No way / All the times when we were close / I'll remember these things the most / I see all my dreams come tumblin' down / I can't be happy without you around / So alone I keep the wolves at bay / And there's only one thing I can say / You must explain why this must be / Did you lie when you spoke to me? / Did you stand by me? / No not at all / Now I got a job but it don't pay / I need new clothes I need somewhere to stay / But without all of these things I can do / But without your love I won't make it through / But you don't understand my point of view / I supopose there's nothing I can do / You must explain why this must be / Did you lie when you spoke to me? / Did you stand by me?

Bono will be in Oakland (rumor?) ... Oakland should prepare for a visit from international activist rock star Bono, Rep. Barbara Lee said Monday. ... Mothers Of The Disappeared

Early in the day, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos gives Bono a traditional Chilean instrument called a Charango. Shortly before the show, Bono visits with relatives of political dissidents who disappeared during the rule of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. That all comes together during tonight's concert when Bono and Edge -- playing the Charango (similar in appearance to a small guitar) -- perform 'Mothers of the Disappeared' for the first time since U2's last show in Chile in 1998. Bono toasts 'the new Chile' with champagne at the end of the show. Lagos and President-elect Michelle Bachellet are in attendance. 'All I Want Is You' as the closer. Edge playing 'Mothers Of The Disappeared' was the highlight, a year ago.

Rock the Casbah by The Clash - Album:  Combat Rock - 1982 - U.S. Chart:  8 - U.K. Chart:  30 - Joe Strummer wrote the lyrics about an Arab ruler (the Shereef) who hates music, but is defied by the citizens and even his own air force. Strummer was inspired by a news report of Iranians who were flogged for owning Disco albums. Clash Drummer Topper Headon collaborated to the music. Headon left the group shortly after this was released because of his heroin addiction. He was replaced by Tory Crimes, who was the original drummer for The Clash. This was The Clash's biggest United States hit and along with "Train In Vain," one of only 2 that reached the Top 40. They had several Top 40 hits in England. "Casbah" (also spelled "Qasbah" or "Kasbah") refers to walled areas in many North African towns, especially the one in Algiers. In the UK this single was backed by "Long Time Jerk." That song cannot be found anywhere else. The US military used this as a rallying cry when they invaded Iraq in 1991. With electronic sound effects and an intriguing video, this appealed to Americans more than any other Clash song, but it wasn't a good representation of the band. For many young people in the US, The Clash were known as a British import with a catchy song, similar to MTV darlings like Thomas Dolby and Devo. In England they were revered for breaking new ground as Rock rebels. When this became a hit, Joe Strummer considered leaving The Clash. He couldn't justify singing rebellious songs when the band was rich and successful. In their early years, when they were struggling, their music was sincere, but he felt they were becoming a joke. The band broke up in 1985. The music video features an Arab and an orthodox Jewish person skanking, to go with the middle eastern theme. The parts of the Arab and Jew were played by longtime Clash manager Bernie Rhodes (The Arab) and longtime Clash friend Mark "Frothler" Helfont (the Jew). Guitarist Mick Jones describes this song as the Clash moment he is most proud of.

Lyrics: "Now the king told the boogie men / You have to let that raga drop / The oil down the desert way / Has been shakin' to the top / The sheik he drove his Cadillac / He went a' cruisin' down the ville / The muezzin was a' standing / On the radiator grille / [Chorus] / The shareef don't like it / Rockin' the Casbah / Rock the Casbah / The shareef don't like it / Rockin' the Casbah / Rock the Casbah / By order of the prophet / We ban that boogie sound / Degenerate the faithful / With that crazy Casbah sound / But the Bedouin they brought out / The electric camel drum / The local guitar picker / Got his guitar picking thumb / As soon as the shareef / Had cleared the square / They began to wail / [Chorus] / Now over at the temple / Oh! They really pack 'em in / The in crowd say it's cool / To dig this chanting thing / But as the wind changed direction / The temple band took five / The crowd caught a wiff / Of that crazy Casbah jive / [Chorus] / The king called up his jet fighters / He said you better earn your pay / Drop your bombs between the minarets / Down the Casbah way / As soon as the shareef was / Chauffeured outta there / The jet pilots tuned to / The cockpit radio blare / As soon as the shareef was / Outta their hair / The jet pilots wailed / [Chorus] / He thinks it's not kosher / Fundamentally he can't take it. / You know he really hates it.

London Calling by The Clash - Album:  London Calling - Date:  1979 - U.K. Chart:  11 - This is an apocalyptic song, detailing the many ways the world could end, including the coming of the ice age, starvation, and war. It was the song that best defined The Clash, who were known for lashing out against injustice and rebelling against the establishment, which is pretty much what Punk Rock was all about. Clash singer Joe Strummer was a news junkie, and many of the images of doom in the lyrics came from news reports he read. The title came from the BBC World Service's radio station identification: "This is London calling..." The BBC used it during World War II. The line, "London is drowning and I live by the river" came from a saying in England that if the Thames river ever flooded, all of London would be under water. Joe Strummer was living in a high-rise apartment, so he would have been OK. The line about the "Nuclear Error" was inspired by the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor meltdown in March, 1979. The Clash recorded this album after returning to England from a short US tour. The band was intrigued by American music as well as its rock'n'roll mythology, so much so that the album cover was a tribute to Elvis Presley's first album. This was recorded at Wessex Studios, located in a former church in the Highbury district of North London. Many hit recordings had already come out of this studio, including singles and albums by the Sex Pistols, The Pretenders and the Tom Robinson Band. Chief engineer and studio manager Bill Price had developed a slew of unique recording techniques suited to the room. London Calling was a double album, but it wasn't supposed to be. The record company wanted it finished so they could release it, but the band had other ideas and insisted on making it a double album. By this time, The Clash were doing constant battle with their record label, but their producer, Guy Stevens, was on their side and helped them get their way. It ended up being the last album The Clash worked on with Stevens, who died in 1980 after falling down a flight of stairs. Rolling Stone magazine named this the best album of the '80s, even though It was actually released in December, 1979. According to NME magazine (3/16/91), we know that Paul Simonon smashed his bass guitar - as photographed on the cover of the album - at exactly 10:50 pm. This is because he broke his watch in the process and handed the busted bits to photographer Pennie Smith. As a tribute to Clash singer/guitarist Joe Strummer, who died in 2002, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Little Steven Van Zant played this at the close of the 2003 Grammys as a tribute to the band. All 4 played guitar and took turns on vocals. The Grammys is the type of commercialized event The Clash probably would have avoided, although they did win their first Grammy that night when "Westway To The World" won for Best Long Form Music Video. In 2002, The Clash were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and it was rumored that Bruce Springsteen would join them to perform at the ceremony. The remaining members declined, as they felt playing a $1500-a-plate dinner for music executives would go against everything they stood for. Said bass player Paul Simonon: "I think it's better for The Clash to play in front of their public, rather than a seated and booted audience."

Lyrics for London Calling: London calling to the faraway towns / Now that war is declared and battle come down / London calling to the underworld / Come out of the cupboard all you boys and girs / London calling now don't look to us / Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust / London calling see we ain't got no swing / Except for the ring of that truncheon thing / The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in / Meltdown expected the wheat is growing thin / Engines stop running but I have no fear / 'Cause London is crowning and I live by the river / London calling to the imitation zone / Forget it brother, you can go it alone / London calling to the zombies of death / Quit holding out and draw another breath / London calling and I don't wanna shout / But while we were talking I saw you noddin' out / London calling, see we ain't got no highs / Except for the one with the yellowy eyes / The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in / Engines stop running the wheat is growing thin / A nuclear error but I have no fear / 'Cause London is drowning and I live by the river / Now get this / London calling yes I was there too / And you know what they said - well some of it was true / London calling at the top of the dial / And after all this won't you give me a smile? / I never felt so much like...

Parable of the sower - Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: "Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."

Parable of the sower - On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables,  saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear."

Curious spirit - The origin of everything. The curiosity to know who we are, to know our origin, the origin of the world, was born when the first man looked for the sky and he saw only himself, at the mercy of a nature that as much creates as much destroys. It continues alive today, feeding the imagination of the scientists who try to decipher our origins. For the four corners of the Earth, all the cultures of the past had looked for some form to explain the origin of the universe and the life, known histories as creation myths, narratives that count as the world, the animals and the people had appeared. It is difficult to imagine that somebody never had asked, at  least a time, perhaps in the company of friends in a night of summer, walking perhaps alone for the beach, from where comes the incredible diversity that we see in the nature. This irresistible will to understand our origins is so old how much the history of the humanity. Exactly living in a technological society, defined to a large extent for the advances of science, still today we divide with our ancestral a curiosity on our origins and the direction of the life. We continue in asking if we are special, as we are capable to reflect on ourselves, the pass time or the inevitable arrival of the death. It has sets of ten of thousand years, when the men had started to join themselves in groups, their survival was to a large extent controlled for the whims of the nature. Storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanos, the unexpected dictated the life. How so fragile creatures could try to exert some control on the fury of the natural phenomena? Through the religion. Although the first societies have not left very, primitive paintings in caves and devices demonstrate their concern with the nature, at the same time capable to create and to destroy, to give life and to take off it. Soon had appeared gods in the forests and skies, in mountains, volcanos and oceans; gods that controlled the destination of the tribe, that they needed to be feared and to be adored, served. The nature, in all its manifestations, became divine, same it a goddess. And the gods, as the human beings, had their desires and vanities, capable of great attitudes and great tragedies. According to majority of creation myths, they had been overseen the origin of all the things. These histories, hundreds of them, reflect the culture of that had created them, the rules, the place where they lived and, in some cases, where still they live. The hopis indians, for example, inhabited (and its descendants still inhabit) a half-barren region southwestern North American where the adobe is very common. Their histories of creation count as the first men had been forged by gods from adobe dolls. We find here an aspect that reappears frequently in the creation narratives: gods use some raw material to create the life, livening up it with its supernatural powers. As we read in the Old Bible, God created Adam of the adobe and livened up it with the breath of the life. Then Jehovah God shaped the man with the clay of the ground  and the man became a living being [Gênesis 2:7 ]. Already the ianomamis of the Amazonia tell that the sky fell and only some people had escaped, ancestral of that live today. The important for us is that we continue wanting to know who we are and from where we came. If they had changed histories and the methods, did not change the curious spirit,  fascinated for the mysteries of the life and the death.

N.B. man gets nod for work on U2, Green Day video - A Fredericton visual artist was honoured this month in Los Angeles for his work on a music video by U2 and Green Day. Graham Fyffe was among four recipients of the Visual Effects Society award for outstanding visual effects in a music video. The awards were handed out on Feb. 11. The award recognized the video for the The Saints Are Coming by U2 and Green Day. The video purports to show large numbers of U.S. combat troops helping in the rescue efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The video mixes news footage from the aftermath of the August 2005 disaster in New Orleans with images of helicopters and tanks to create the impression of a massive military effort in the storm-damaged city being covered by the media. In one shot a CNN-style super reads "U.S. Iraq troops redeployed to New Orleans." "It has to look absolutely real, so the audience can see what appears to be actual news footage," Fyffe said Tuesday. "We basically had actual news footage of flooded streets, and we put in tanks and airplanes." The video gained a lot of attention from the public after it was posted on the internet. Fyffe said The Saints Are Coming was viewed over a million times in one day on YouTube. U2 and Green Day are donating all proceeds from the song to musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. Read on cbc

...and stay 'beating' with right hand ...  creating a power sound mass

Bono speaks about the reunin of the nations of Latin America during "Pride" (Brazilians fans boo Argentina´s name). The quality of the sounds was much better that the Stone´s sounds on saturday. The sharp guitar of The Edge sounded for all the stadium, giving as a present to the fans the virtuosism of the musician who created a proper style, mixing the use of the guitar as percurssion´instrument, when he 'bolt' the arm with left hand and stay 'beating' with right hand, til the multiple sounds using the delay, creating a power sound mass. Bono mentions a carnaval´s metaphora during 'One' - "I love Brazil, I love Carnival, because everyone crams together -- rich and poor, young and old, left and right. But to beat poverty, all of us have to work together, to act together." Sao Paulo - 1st show - Vertigo tour - february 20, 2006 (amazing...cause Edge travelled the whole night, arrived early morning and played all his wisdom at the night...AMAZING)

The company, which manages U2 and other acts like Paddy Casey, made a pre-tax profit of EU283,003 in the year to end March 2006, up from EU203,170. The profits would have been even better were it not for a EU400,000 write off in the cost of an "unlisted investment," the accounts said. ... Mr. McGuinness has been with U2 since the band started in the 1980s and is widely referred to as its fifth member. He has also represented acts like PJ Harvey and Sinead O'Connor. ... Salary and pension costs for Principle's three directors amounted to EU1.4m, a slight rise year-on-year. The directors are listed as Mr. McGuinness, Mr. Bowen and an American Keryn Kaplan. The company employs 16 people at its Dublin base and also has an office in New York. ...  irishexaminer

He'll climb the tallest mountain to fight AIDS - Some people climb a mountain just because it's there, but Vijay Devarajan has a better reason. The 25-year-old Arlington native plans to climb Africa's tallest peak, Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, to help his company raise about $500,000 to support an AIDS clinic in Kenya. ... He said two things drew him to the project: wanting to help children with AIDS, and the opportunity to follow the lead of Bono, the frontman of the Irish rock band U2 who is active in humanitarian causes around the world. "U2 is my favorite band of all time, and Bono is active with AIDS in Africa," Devarajan said. ... whole article and how to dante here

Fragile N Orleans marks carnival

... This is the second carnival since Katrina struck the city in August 2005, when some 1,300 people were killed in the ensuing floods. The population of New Orleans fell from nearly 500,000 to less than 200,000. Various celebrities are attending the celebrations, including actor James Gandolfini, of TV series The Sopranos, and members of the New Orleans Saints football team. The carnival marks the day before the Christian period of Lent begins, and is traditionally a raucous occasion. articles, photos, videos and live webcams in New Orleans (MARDI GRAS) on Music Rising

Tornedoes hit New Orleans - Forecasters now believe two tornadoes hit New Orleans -- both packing winds comparable to, or stronger than, Hurricane Katrina. According to the National Weather Service, it appears both twisters were F-Two storms, with winds between 113 and 158 miles an hour. That compares to Katrina's top winds of 125 miles an hour. articles, photos and videos on Music Rising

U2: When I Look At The World - For years I have been a fan of the rock band U2, so I was excited last year when I received for my birthday the book "U2 by U2." The book contains stories of the band's history, but also insights on most of their songs. One song that has intrigued me is called "When I Look at the World." It's not one of their most popular songs, so you might not have heard of it. The song is about someone struggling to believe in God. In the book, Bono discloses that the song is about how people look at him and wonder how he can still believe in God while the world suffers. How does he hold on to his faith in God with hurricanes, tsunamis, AIDS, hunger, terrorists and war? The song is written from the point of view of someone who is having a crisis of faith. They are looking at a believer who, Bono says, "has built their house upon a rock." When there is all kinds of chaos. "And everyone is walking lame. You don't even blink now do you? Don't even look away. So I try to be like you. Try to feel it like you do. But without you it's no use. I can't see what you see / When I look at the world. I'm sure you know someone like this. Someone who struggles to believe. It might be your husband or your wife; your mom or dad; your son or daughter; a friend or coworker, or you. You wonder why they can't see what you see. Why they can't feel what you feel, believe what you believe. To you, your faith seems so obvious. In fact, you speak of it with such certainty and absolute that you can't believe others don't get it. "How could they be so blind? It's right there in front of them," you say. And yet, right there is no where for them. One of my favorite stories in the Bible is when a father approaches Jesus with a crisis (Mark 9:14. The man's son is overcome by an evil spirit that is destroying the boy's life. This dad asked Jesus if he would have mercy on the boy and heal him. But as the dad closes his request, he injects what feels like a challenge, "if you can," he says to Jesus. The man is not sure of Jesus' ability. He questions Jesus' capacity for the miraculous and perhaps even his compassion. Jesus replies, "Anything is possible if a person believes." Then the father responds with great honesty, "I do believe, but help the part of me that doesn't." In this U2 song, Bono envisions someone sitting in a waiting room at the hospital, in the days when people could smoke in such places. Hospitals are often the place where faith is put to the test. A place where we hope for a miracle, but doubt the possibilities. "I'm in the waiting-room, I can't see for the smoke, I think of you and your holy book, while the rest of us choke. Tell me, tell me, what do you see? Tell me, tell me, what's wrong with me?" dailybulletin

Grammy ... And how can I forget the 16-hour Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope concert at Giants Stadium in 1986, where The Police were joined by Bono of U2 on the song, “Invisible Sun?” What a night. ... here

ONE Campaign ... According to an e-mail sent to members of the ONE campaign earlier this week, the U.S. Senate secured the $1 billion in poverty-fighting funds sought by the campaign as well as an additional $450 million "in the fight to save hundreds of thousands of lives." here

The idea of covering 'Won't Get Fooled Again' was planned during a video shoot in Rio for the song 'Walk On', when The Edge, who had a Marshall stack behind him and felt inspired to play what he considered "one of the great riffs", launched into about thirty seconds of the song - "just a goof", he says - and Larry joined in. At Irving Plaza, U2 are on small stage, not playing but listening to the Who's version of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' through the monitors. The Edge fingers his guitar, checking the chords. After only two or three minutes he gestures for the Who to be switched off, and they launch straight into their own pared-down version. At the end, The Edge switches to the Rolling Stones' 'Bitch'. Bono looks unsure about this. "From a youth manifesto to a p---s manifesto", he queries. "How did the Who end it?" The Edge wonders. "I don't know - we didn't get that far on the album," Bono points out. " I just want to warn you, Lenny Kravitz will beout there, and he'll know all the chords."

Bono praises Reid on AIDS funding - Bono, the lead singer for the band U2, is a big Harry Reid fan these days. That's because the Senate majority leader helped secure a $1.3 billion boost in federal funding for global AIDS programs this week. The increase means the U.S. will spend $4.5 billion this year on programs to fight AIDS, HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, mainly in Africa. The money funds AIDS drugs and mosquito netting, among other prevention and treatment programs. "Sen. Reid and his colleagues came through," Bono said in a statement released Thursday. "His leadership and their resolve deserve the respect of all who work on these issues, and the countless souls, literally hundreds and thousands, who will now owe the United States their lives." Reid was able to salvage the $1.3 billion increase in AIDS spending that would have been lost under the Democrats plan to keep spending by the various federal departments and agencies at their current fiscal levels. Bono's praise for Reid's leadership on the issue marked a change of heart for the Irish singer. Just two months ago, Bono, an outspoken advocate for ending AIDS and poverty in Africa, expressed disappointment with Reid after he could not gain assurances from the Nevada Democrat that the funding boost would not be lost this year. On Thursday, Bono had nothing but praise for Reid, saying the longtime politician had been an "amazing guide" during his visit to Capitol Hill last year. Reid spokesman Jon Summers said the senator "appreciates the kind words." "This is something Sen. Reid feels was the right thing to do," he said. Summers said he did not know if Reid was a fan of U2's music but said: "He likes Irish folk music and he's a huge music fan." rgj

Bono's Humanitarian Efforts Not Good Enough For North Dakota - Over the course of more than two decades, U2's Bono has redefined the role of the rock and roll frontman: He's become a mouthpiece for the disenfranchised, held court with the leaders of the most powerful nations on earth, helped feed the poor, launched a global campaign against AIDS in Africa and has been named one Time magazine's "Persons of the Year." And yet, apparently all of that isn't good enough for the North Dakota House of Representatives. On Thursday, lawmakers in the House defeated a resolution to honor the charismatic rocker's advocacy of debt relief for Third World countries, saying that he had no connection to the state. State Rep. Scot Kelsh, who sponsored the measure — and who, according to his bio on the North Dakota State Legislature Web site, is a member of the "FM Chapter of the Minnesota Association of Songwriters" — told The Associated Press that he got the idea after reading an article in a magazine published by the National Conference of State Legislatures, which said that no state had approved a resolution to honor Bono. In the resolution, Kelsh sought to pay tribute to Bono for his "humanitarian work in urging decision makers and religious leaders to set aside their philosophical differences to ease the burden of those who have the least among us," though it would probably have helped matters if he had clarified which Bono he was speaking about. Another Representative, Republican Gil Herbel of Grafton, North Dakota, told the AP that he originally though the resolution referred to the late Sonny Bono, the former singer/actor/ Republican congressman and husband of Cher. "When I saw the resolution, I was looking for Cher's name in there," Herbel said. And Herbel was not alone in his confusion — apparently many state reps were also a bit flabbergasted by the resolution, as evidenced by its rather handy defeat (by a vote of 58-35) in the House. mtv
