Slade - Cum On Feel The Noize

Cum On Feel The Noise by Slade - Album:  Sladest - 1973 - U.S. Chart:  98 - U.K. Chart:  1. This is a Glam Rock classic. Slade performed loud, anthemic songs in flamboyant costumes, often with lots of makeup and plenty of energy. Glam Rock was big in the UK in the mid-'70s, and this was one of the genre's first hits. Slade also hit #1 with similarly misspelled songs "Coz I Luv You" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now." In 1983, this became a #5 US hit for Quiet Riot when it was released on their album Metal Health. The song was suggested by the producer to test the band's viability, since the original version was never a hit in the USA. Quiet Riot hated the song and decided to intentionally play it poorly so that it would be unreleaseable. The record producer however loved it, and the first take became the band's hit single. Quiet Riot had been recording since 1975 without a hit. After finding success with this, they had a minor hit with their next single "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" and recorded another Slade song, "Mama Weer All Crazee Now." After Metal Health, they never caught on and failed to enjoy the success of similar bands like Motley Crue and Poison. If you consider Quiet Riot to be Heavy Metal, then Metal Health was the first Heavy Metal album to hit #1.

Vestido de Noiva (Wedding Dress or Dress of a Bride) - Nelson Rodrigues

These photos from FLIP in Paraty mean a homage to Nelson Rodrigues (August 23, 1912 - December 21, 1980), who was an important Brazilian dramatist, journalist and writer. Many of his plays and novels became movies and/or TV programs. Beginning in 1940 Nelson divided his time between his job at O Globo and his personal work as dramatist. In 1941 his first play debuted, A Mulher Sem Pecado (The Woman Without Sin, in English). It was a fiasco, but his second play, Vestido de Noiva (Wedding Dress or Dress of a Bride) was a thundering success.

Ultra-Expensive Rock Concert Tees - You have the Stratocaster guitar Hendrix strummed. You spent thousands of dollars to sit front row at a Springsteen show. How else can you show you are a proud worshipper of all rock gods? Purchase the shirts off their backs. Though T-shirts sold at concerts may one day command sky-high prices, especially if the group disbands or a member dies, they don't have to be sold at large venues to be coveted or deemed collectible. Today, the most sought-after shirts are either made in small quantities (hence rarity) or were once worn by the celebrities themselves.  ...

The Edge's Concert T-Shirt - $9,600

This t-shirt was worn by U2 guitarist The Edge at a 2003 (2001) concert and sold at auction in April "In this case, we have a picture of him wearing the shirt, which helps bolster the value of it" says Darren Julien, chief executive of Julian Auctions, which ran the sale. XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro

Daniela Mercury finishes the party, yesterday, singing 'Cidade Maravilhosa' and 'Aquarela do Brasil'. Unfortunately the speaker speaks over the song. There were no news in the party, it was the traditional openning party to sports. Again, I disagree with this event in Brazil, cause we have many things in need the money, as education, heath .... and they spend money to build stadiums ... Daniela Mercury is a singer as Ivete Sangalo, she met 3 U2, too, in Salvador last year. One thing, Lula was booed by 90.000 people at Maracana stadium during 6 times ... how did he get the re-election?  I didn't vote him.

A Truck Tough Enough for the Dead Zone - NEW ORLEANS It was an ill-advised journey to a moribund city, the place of my birth and upbringing. Family and friends, all living elsewhere, begged me not to come here. My wife, Mary Anne, feared that I would become depressed. My doctors worried that the city lacked the medical prowess to take care of a patient who had had two kidney transplants. And there were all of the stories of fetid conditions -- water-rotted houses and their unusable contents, piles of trash, abandoned and decrepit streets in my old 9th Ward, Gentilly and East New Orleans neighborhoods. ... Alan Pauls - 'The Past'

Argentine Alan Pauls presented in the FLIP if love is illness. He debated the subject of his book “The Past” with the psychoanalyst Maria Rita Kehl. Considered the new great name of Latin American literature, Pauls, 48 years old, is also confirmed as the most waited of the Latin writers: the tickets for his debate in Saturday (7), at 3:00 pm. with the psychoanalyst Maria Rita Kehl, sold out since last week. The two discussed the subject of his book - the love is or not an illness. And the success of the Argentine must be extended: in fall of the year, the history of love of Rímini and Sofia will be in the cinemas, directed for Hector Babenco and having the actor Gael García Bernal. In “The Past” (CosacNaify), Pauls tells under the form of a male auto-analysis the torment and the depression of the translator Rímini to try to reconstruct his life without Sofia, with who lived 12 years. But it is not the missing Sofia who pursues him. Also disturbed with the separation, the former-wife asks for him, threatening him with the 'value' of the past, exactly at the moments of higher affirmation of his new life. In the book, Pauls still shares the hard life and the workmanship of the fictitious painter Jeremy Riltse, who uses the automutilation as artistic expression, in a parallel with the loving tragedy of Rímini and Sofia. “The Past” has a strong narrative, that it arrests the reader, until the beginning of the third part. With the history of Riltse painter and his picture painted, that passes then to monopolize the romance for about 80 pages, it has one cut: the reader cannot more keep its comfortable position of identification with Rímini. Alan Pauls, doesn't consider it as a division of the structure in the book, but yes as a shunting line. Riltse is always in the romance. He appears early, in the first pages, and he runs all the history as a wire that appears and disappears. And, in some way, is a personage who incarnates and takes until the limit an experience that Rímini and Sofia know very well: the experience of an aesthetic life, converted into art. In relation to the shunting line, Pauls enjoys  this ability that the romance has since its origins: the possibility by that the narrative takes routes unexpected, that if moves away from its main trunk, explores other dimensions and comes back. This freedom to go jumping of twig in twig is perhaps most characteristic of the soap opera tradition. Some writers, when opting to a language that shocks and until cause aversion, repeat an aesthetic way already walked by the plastic artists. Pauls believes that literature shares in the maximum, cultural contexts, but what they make one and another one with this context is specific in each case. A language - in his way thinking - is a alway multiple field, where there are interferences of forces, tunes, very heterogeneous attitudes: the same language that reaches the highest poetry is the one that can sink, a line later, in the silt dirtiest. A language is a field of intensities and the shock or repulses are so interesting and productive as the emotion and the beauty. In his book, Rímini does not have mother. Or his mother does not appear in the romance not even as a memory. To Pauls “The Past” is a patrilinear (of paternal ancestry) romance. Nor Rímini nor himself needs mothers. But if it is necessary, there is the personage of Frida Breitenbach, who is a specie of supermother (incestuous, in the limit) of the two, of Rímini and Sofia. In Rio De Janeiro, Rímini had allergy. In São Paulo, a desolation lesson. Pauls says that nothing of this is related to Brazil. If Rímini had travelled for Uruguay, would have asthma; in Bolivia, he would break a leg; and, in Chile, would have a bad day with shellfishes. Any unknown territory would unchain a system of delicate and capricious sensors of his paranóic organism. “Nothing kills in such a way as to have that to represent a country”, said Jacques Vaché (French writer that influenced Andres Breton of the surrealista movement at the beginning). Pauls would add: “Nothing kills in such a way as to have that to represent… something, anything”. I don't want to represent. The only thing that interest me is to write: the unique experience truly unknown that I know.

(rumor ... Brazilian Gisele Bundchen to appear in a video for U2's new CD) - Bundchen to bond with Bono on music video? Remember when supermodels were de rigueur in music videos? Examples include Linda Evangelista in George Michael 's "Freedom," Naomi Campbell in Jay-Z's "Change Clothes," Kate Moss in Elton John's "The Way You Look Tonight," Iman in Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time," Claudia Schiffer in Bon Jovi's "Say It Isn't So," Christie Brinkley in Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl," Helena Christensen in Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game . " Soon, we may be able to add Gisele Bundchen to that list. Word is Tom Brady's supermodel sweetheart is in talks with Bono to star in a video for U2's new CD. Bundchen and Bono became friendly when she worked -- gratis -- for the singer's RED campaign.  Source: boston.com

A Long Way Gone - Ishmael Beah

(Ishmael Beah joking at Morro do Vidigal - Rio de Janeiro) - Former child soldier Ishmael Beah has seen his memoir, A Long Way Gone as a highlight. For a young man whose village and family were burned, who evaded capture amidst the war-torn landscape of Sierra Leone, and finally was given an AK-47 and coerced to join the government army, a best-selling book comes as quite a twist in the road. Ishmael heard his commanding officer frequently tell him and his comrades, “Visualize the enemy, the rebels who killed your parents, your family, and those who are responsible for everything that has happened to you.” In their drills when they did not properly bayonet a banana tree, the officer reprimanded them by saying: "Is that how you stab someone who had killed your family?” As Beah's story unfolds, one cannot help but wonder about the fate of such children, suckled on revenge from such a tender age. What is strong enough to overcome that kind of past? The answer does not come as a surprise. It is the power of forgiveness and unconditional love. When UNICEF forces showed up one day and negotiated with Beah’s commander for the release of the children soldiers in his command, Ishmael and others found themselves suddenly transported to a rehabilitation camp. One would think that these children would be grateful for release and embrace these workers for their role in their redemption. But, you're wrong. It would take months for these children to lose their appetite for brown-brown (cocaine mixed with gun-powder), for violence, and for revenge. Day after day these young kids would lash out at the workers and the other children. Day after day, the workers would respond with forgiveness and love. Beah recounts the story of one of the workers in the rehabilitation compound named Poppay, whom the children beat, stabbed and left unconscious. Several days later, Poppay returned from the hospital, limping, but with a smile on his face. "It is not your fault that you did such a thing to me," he said. As Beah recalls, “Most of the staff members were like that; they returned smiling after we hurt them. It was as if they had made a pact not to give up on us.” Wittingly or unwittingly, they were displaying the turn-the-other-cheek kind of love that Christ taught. And through their display of grace, they sent a powerful message: Revenge stops here. But Beah’s horrific tale is, sadly, too common. There are an estimated 250,000 child soldiers in the world today. Recently, U.S. Senators Durbin and Brownback introduced The Child Soldier Prevention Act of 2007 to help protect these exploited children. This bill would curtail U.S. military assistance to governments that do not work to demobilize and stop the forcing or recruiting of children into military service. I want to encourage you to call your Congressman to support the bill. Meanwhile, Ishmael Beah has a lesson worth learning for all of us. As he says, “To forgive is not to forget but to transform all that happened into something positive because the other route can only bring more suffering to [ourselves] and to those around [us].” He lives, since 1998 in NYC with his adoptive mother. Ishamel was on July 8, 2007, in Paraty to discuss the violence and childhood. I´ll post his day at FLIP.

Dara sent me a photo of this U2 shirt she had in high school, which is funny, because someone else sent me a photo of the same shirt ... and I also had this shirt in high school! ... usatoday

J. M. Coetzee

Nobel Prizes and English language are the highlights of literary party Flip, in Paraty (RIO DE JANEIRO); brings winning South Africans of the maximum prize of literature. British writers and from former-colonies are highlights of this edition. J.M. Coetzee, winning South African author of the Nobel, maked the opening in this Wednesday (4) of its fifth edition having the English language in prominence. Of the 18 invited stars or foreign revelations, seven - J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Ishmael Beah, Ahdaf Soueif, Kiran Desai, Will Self and Robert Fisk - are English authors or from British former-colonies of Africa and Asia, awardees and good in the United kingdom. And would be eight, if William Boyd had not cancelled his participation in the last hour. A record number, if comparative to previous editions. Adding it the Americans, are 11 (more than the half) the total of writers in English language. Spanish and Portuguese are the others two languages of the Flip. This time, doesn't have not even French or Italian, that had passed for other editions. Beyond sharing the language, these seven authors focus in their workmanships the different realities of the center and the periphery of the former-empire. Almost all have still the experience to transit between the worlds of colonized and the colonizador, giving the voice to the personages from this hybrid cultural environment, tragically 'tattooed' for the unfoldings of the domination politics. It's the debate on the old imperialism, reviwed to the light of the September 11th and the War of Iraq. And to read or to re-read these authors. Awardees with Nobel, South Africans J.M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer, that have their workmanships strongly marked by the effects of apartheid, confirm in Paraty their position of stars: the tickets for their lectures had been soldout quickly. Biggest celebrity of the party, Coetzee, that lives today in Australia, read in worldwide release, in Saturday at night, stretches of his new book, 'Diario De Um Ano Ruim' - “Daily Of A Bad Year'. With shy fame, Coetzee, 67 years old, was the only foreigner to present alone and not to answer the questions of the public or the press.

Americas turn their attention to Rio de Janeiro for 15th Pan American Games

(this video is about the rehearsal of party-open of the games) - Rio de Janeiro's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games will come under early scrutiny at the 15th Pan American Games, which will be held in the city on July 13-29. The Pan American Games are a continental version of the Olympics that will bring together some 5,600 athletes from 42 countries to compete in 41 sports. Experts say the ability to organize events like the regional games will be one of the key elements the International Olympic Committee will take into consideration when it chooses the city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Any problems in staging the Pan American Games could well have adverse effects on Rio's Olympic bid and boost the hopes of its rivals that include Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid. Brazil has spent over $2 billion to hold the Pan American Games, but there are concerns that the high local crime rate and the issue of environmental preservation may overshadow the city's efforts to stage a successful event. Organizers have repeatedly reminded local people that this year's games are the biggest competition in Brazil since the country hosted the soccer World Cup finals in 1950 and the 1963 Pan American Games in Sao Paulo. When we organize an event like, Rio is telling the world we can host any event," Rio Mayor Cesar Maia told the daily O Globo. Maia, however, has pointed out that security is not flawless because the city usually does not have extensive police patrols. It is the military police who are in charge of patrolling the streets and they are under the control of the state governor, Maia's political foe Sergio Cabral. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has mentioned measures to reinforce security, including the purchase 1,000 new vehicles as well as helicopters. "If it works, as I expect it will, we will have a new public security model in the country. We will be able to reduce violence in Brazil substantially," Lula da Silva said. Security forces are expected to occupy the shanty towns that lie along the routes through which the delegations will pass between the Galeao Tom Jobim international airport and the Pan American Games' Village located in the rich beach district of Barra da Tijuca. "We have identified the zones where there is more tension and, after this identification, we will strengthen security in these areas during the games," Sports Minister Orlando Silva said. Maia does not believe that the ongoing and unprecedented large-scale operations by the local police against drug traffickers represent any threat to the games. At least 25 people were killed in clashes with the police in June and the local media have said some of them were killed unnecessarily. "There is no connection between drug traffic and big events. There is police patrolling during these events," the mayor told O Globo. Environmental preservation is another source of concern, with many people doubting whether the waters of Guanabara Bay are fit for the sailing competitions that will take place beneath Sugar Loaf Mount. "I've noted that competitors fear the garbage usually floating in the bay may stick to their boats and decrease their speed," Felipe Mendes of the sports daily Lance said. Garbage such as plastic bags and pieces of timber floating in the waters has recently caused a number of incidents with ferry boats that cross the bay linking Rio to neighboring Niteroi. According to Mendes, local authorities have promised the International Olympic Committee that the slow-paced operations to decontaminate the bay's waters would be accelerated, but very little has been done in this sector. City Hall estimates some 700,000 tourists will be visiting Rio during the competition and hotels along the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema have already secured 90-percent occupation rates, the Brazilian Hotels Association says. Rio de Janeiro claims that the investments made to host the Pan American Games will be an advantage in the race to host the Olympics. Organizers said the fact that all the competitions will take place in four main complexes based within a radius of 25 kilometers is another major advantage the city has over its potential competitors. "We will have to convince the IOC that we have the same conditions to host the Olympic Games as cities like Tokyo and Chicago which are in rich nations," Mendes said. The IOC is set to the host of the 2016 Olympics in October 2009.  yahoo

THE LAST RECORD I FELL IN LOVE WITH

Now Here is Nowhere
Secret Machines, 2004

They did a couple of shows with us at the end of the last tour. This album is just not like anything that's happening anywhere else. The opening track is nine or ten minutes long. I asked them what their influences were and I thought they'd be into Magazine, early post-punk stuff, but they're all Neul fans, into Krautrock! (from Uncut; you can read: scroll down...)

U2'S EDGE REVEALS HIS LOVE FOR GLAM ROCK

This month's Uncut is an all-star special, where you'll discover that, as a schoolboy, The Edge from U2 "wasn't in touch with my feminine side! Marc Bolan was a little too effeminate for me when I was young. But when I realised I could play 'Hot Love', I reassessed T.Rex." uncut

My Life in Music: The Edge

U2's revered guitar hero on all the records that he can't leave behind.

Uncut, August 07, 2007

The Edge

THE FIRST SINGLE I BOUGHT

Cum On Feel The Noize
Slade, 1973

The first record I ever bought was Sgt. Pepper. But the first single was this. I would have been 10 or 11, and it was a big deal, going into a record shop with your two shillings, because that's where all the big boys were. There were some good pop songs round about in those days. Soon after, I bought Alice Cooper's "School's Out."

THE RECORD THAT REMINDS ME OF BEING A TEENAGER

Hot Love
T.Rex, 1971

Marc Bolan was a little too effeminate for me when I was young. I wasn't in touch with my feminine side! But when I started learning guitar a a couple of years later, we had the Top of the Pops compilations, which was a big Christmas present everyone got. So, I was working on "Hot Love" from one of those albums, and when I realised I could play it, I reassessed T.Rex.

THE RECORD THAT MADE ME WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR

A Hard Day's Night
The Beatles, 1964

The film was on at Christmas, for something like five years in succession, and I was really taken in by the whole package. I actually had a guitar at that point -- a miniature brought home by my dad from Spain. I'm not sure if I ever learned how to play it, but later my brother was given a guitar which we learned to tune. That was the guitar I learned to play chords on.

THE RECORD BY A LOCAL HERO THAT INSPIRED ME

Taste
Taste, 1969

I listened to Rory Gallagher's records from the age of 12 or 13. It was the glorious guitar playing that first inspired me to really go after the instrument. Not that I had any ambition then, other than just learning how to play. I saw him in Macroom in 1976. I love his early stuff, the pure energy. That was the era of the trio: Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream...and Ireland had Taste.

THE RECORD THAT REMINDS ME OF WHEN WE FIRST BROKE

London Calling
The Clash, 1979

They were part of our era, the punk and post-punk movement. One of the first punk shows I ever saw was Stiff Little Fingers, so music I cared a lot about always had a political element. London Calling is their finest hour. It was released when they were being called sell-outs. I never cared about all that sh**, I just thought this is an amazing band, this is an amazing record.

A RECORD THAT INFLUENCED U2

Horses
Patti Smith, 1975

It had the energy we were trying to achieve, but the poetic quality of it was also really significant, and the way it was arranged -- the economy. I always consider myself a minimalist in terms of arrangement -- the least necessary is the best approach -- and this record is the best example of that. John Cale did an amazing job, and all the players never broke their cool.

THE RECORD THAT RESTORED MY FAITH IN ROCK

The Idiot
Iggy Pop, 1977

Iggy is an amazing rock 'n' roll lyric writer. And The Idiot has some amazing songs. A lot of music up to that point had lost any ability to engage. So when suddenly I heard Bowie, and then Iggy Pop, it was a fascinating world that they were able to conjure up, and I wanted to be a part of it. It felt authentic, like they were writing what was going on in their lives.

THE RECORD I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT

Legend
Bob Marley, 1984

More than anyone, it's Marley whose music I keep going back to. It's the benchmark on every level, musically, spiritually....he's in a different league. Some music puts you in a dark place, but Marley lifts me out of any funky mood I'm in. For a favourite, I'd like to say Uprising, but the best is probably Legend. I know it's a compilation, but it's one of the greats of all time.

THE RECORD I'D LIKE PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL

Beginning to See the Light
The Velvet Underground, 1969

One of our proudest moments was doing a gig with them, and it turned out to be one of their last, because Sterling [Morrison] passed away not long after. One of the great things about being in a big band is that you get the chance to ask someone you love to come and play with you. It was a bit weird -- you shut up and listen. Source: atu2

Latin America's biggest international literary festival in Paraty

 - FLIP 2007 - To reunite 76 writters from 11 countries and a crowd visiting the place of a number higher than 30.000 during 5 days, isn´t easy; but it happened last week, in a small beach-colonial-city, called Paraty, in the middle of the way between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (a remote colonial seaside town 400 kilometers, 250 miles south of Rio de Janeiro, where the streets are still paved with original 16th- century cobblestones). Another great success was the FLIPinha (small FLIP 2007) with the kids at Matriz Square. The winners of Nobel, as the South Africans J.M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer, the promise to the new generation, as the Lyon Sierra Ishmael Beah, were the highights in Paraty. Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee shies away from publicity. He never turned up to receive his two Booker awards. At the 2003 Nobel Prize ceremony, he delivered the mandatory Nobel lecture in half an hour, gave a two-minute thank-you speech and left without talking to admirers. This year, the 67-year-old native of Cape Town, South Africa, is one of the star authors attending Latin America's biggest international literary festival in Paraty. Coetzee fans may finally got a chance to talk about his new book, ``Diary of a Bad Year,'' and past works that raise questions about oppression, racial and social tensions, and power structures. The fifth annual edition of FLIP, as the book fair is known, started July 4 and runned through July 8. It features first-tier foreign authors such as Lawrence Wright and Amos Oz, and younger writers like Kiran Desai, a 35-year-old who won the 2006 Man Booker Prize for ``The Inheritance of Loss,'' a novel included in last year's 100 Notable Books of the Year by the New York Times. Nadine Gordimer, 83 and a far more talkative Nobel laureate, also was in Parati to take part in one of the 21 discussion panels in two huge tents in the town's main square. Gordimer, who said ``any writer of any worth at all hopes to shine a small light into the bloody yet beautiful labyrinth of human experience'' when she received the Nobel Prize in 1991, is scheduled to talk with Israeli novelist and peace campaigner Oz, author of ``A Tale of Love and Darkness,'' about the role that literature plays in saving humanity from injustice. One of the most sought-after events of this year's FLIP, with more than 900 tickets sold in just a few days, Coetzee presented extracts from ``Diary of a Bad Year.'' He read fragments of essays written by his new novel's protagonist, an aging Australian academic expressing his views on contemporary world affairs. Several authors, including Desai and Wright, closed the festival Sunday night, discussing books they would take with them to a desert island.

Superdome, superlounges host stellar rosters - Even if you cherry-picked the best acts from all eight of Saturday's global Live Earth concerts, you couldn't match the urban-music hit parade that was the final night of the Essence Music Festival. ... Mary J. Blige, the "soul hip-hop queen," is a longtime Essence favorite. She certainly understood the ramifications of performing in the Superdome post-Katrina. "I am New Orleans," she said. "I saw my family dying. In this building, so much has happened. Never again will it happen, because of the prayers of the people. And you've got mine." ... As always, Beverly and company were received like favorite sons. The guitarist articulated a logical, well-constructed solo in "Golden Time of Day." At the end of "Happy Feelin's," the bassist plucked notes to harmonize with Beverly. "Back In Stride" was triumphant, as always. Around 1:30 a.m., they capped off the regular set with the singalong "Joy and Pain." For the Superdome in the post-Katrina era, no song is more appropriate. article, photos, videos about Essence Music Festival 2007, on Music Rising

Ireland’s Music Expert Speaks

JACKIE Hayden is a titan in the Irish music journalism business, with a career on both sides of the fence. He got his start in the record industry with Polydor Records in the 1960s and for most of the ‘70s was marketing manager with CBS Ireland, where he signed a little known band called U2 to their first record contract. ... Some artists I talked to, like Hothouse Flowers, actually felt a huge weight lifted off of them when the record companies stopped looking for “the next big thing” in Ireland. It came in two waves. Every record company zoomed into Ireland to sign the next U2. A lot of those acts did not make it internationally. A more organic growth came through when the pressure was off to find the next U2. The whole idea of another U2 is bland and blasé. You need something fresh. They were the first U2, which is what made them so fresh. They were breaking the mold, not copying the formula. ... irishabroad

Out Of Control - Robbie Adams, sound engineer and producer whose credits stretch from Smashing Pumpkins to Beck, is a longtime member of U2's sound department - and often to be found somewhere under the stage recording their shows on tour. Most recently he recorded the audio for the upcoming 'U23D' movie. Here's Robbie's U2 Playlist.

 1. Out of Control - Boy - Number one has to be "Out of Control" from the Boy album. It was on their first single and I rushed out to buy it in the Dandelion Market in Dublin as soon as it came out. I had been a regular at their afternoon shows at the market and needed something to get me through the week.

 2. I will Follow - Boy - "I will Follow" starts off with someone (It sounds like the Edge) counting 1,2,3,4. I love this because it strikes me that he's counting off so much more than just this song, it feels like he's counting off a moment that changed everything, for me anyway. Oh yeah, it's also a great pop song. ...

 6. Even Better Than The Real Thing - Achtung Baby - The first song I worked on with u2 was "Even Better than the Real Thing". I recorded the slide solo in Edge's home studio, and then at the end I got to mix the song with Steve Lillywhite. Still gives me the chills thinking about it. ... Back to Play Lists - Click here to read Catherine Owen's U2 Playlist - Click here to read Jacknife Lee's U2 Playlist - Source: U2.com

ONE Vote '08 launches in Nevada: Movement could impact presidential election - With wholesale optimism and stunning bipartisan support, the ONE Campaign launched its ONE Vote '08 mission Tuesday in Nevada with a clear goal in mind: Make the global fight against disease and extreme poverty key foreign policy issues in next year's presidential election - and for reasons that transcend building good will. Not surprisingly, Nevada was chosen as one of a handful of states to be chosen for a formal launch given the fact early caucuses will be held in the state, which, in turn, will put Nevada at the forefront of choosing the country's next president. "Millions of people will be thinking of the world's poorest people this election," said Jack Oliver in a Tuesday interview with the Free Press. Oliver is a Republican strategist who worked for President Bush and now is co-chairman of the ONE Campaign. To illustrate the bipartisanship, U.S. Reps. Jon Porter, R-Nev., and Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., served as honorary chairpersons at the launch, which occurred at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory School in Las Vegas. Tennis great Agassi is also an honorary chairman. The voter mobilization effort has been driven by former Sens. Bill Frist, a Republican from Tennessee and Tom Daschle, a Democrat from Nebraska, both former majority leaders. Two other key leaders are Bill Gates and Bono, the frontman for the rock group U2. Both men have long pushed top world governments to aid the world's most vulnerable citizens. The ONE Campaign's motto is Saving Lives, Securing our Future. The mission to provide basic health care and economic opportunity to the chronically downtrodden is as pragmatic as it is humanitarian. Details are specific, from mosquito netting to help protect children in Africa from malaria, to providing drugs to those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, this is a political movement that appears to offer solutions rather than rhetoric. A visit to www.onevote08.org reveals key political strategists on both sides of the aisle are on board, including military figures, pastors and others involved in religion - and 2.4 million Americans, 17,000 from Nevada have joined the movement. The humanitarianism is obvious. The pragmatism less so, but equally promising. ... elkodaily

Light show exhibition - Internationally renowned Willie Williams is the man behind U2's ground-breaking Zoo TV and PopMart tours, and has worked with the likes of The Rolling Stones, REM, David Bowie and George Michael. He will launch Lumina Domestica at the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh – the first time he has accepted an invitation to create an art gallery installation. He said: "It will encompass many of the themes incorporated in my performance work." Martyn Lucas, visual arts officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: "Willie's light themed installation playfully incorporates a range of household objects and is a really unique and exciting event – cake stands will never appear the same again!" There will be a chance to view the free exhibition and speak to Willie at the Turnpike on Saturday, between 12.30pm and 3pm. It runs until September 1. wigantoday

BONO IS A TECHNICAL MAGICIAN - U2 frontman BONO has a secret power - he can erase the memory from his friend's mobile phones. Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell says he experiences a bizarre technical hitch soon after speaking to the Irish rocker on the phone. He says, "Nobody has Bono in their contacts! Bono doesn't have a number that can stick in contacts. The last time Bono phoned me, it wiped all my saved text messages out of my phone. "It went 'ching, ching, ching, ching' like that - like a Pac-Man thing. He deleted all my text messages - it was amazing! "Maybe he was using Al Gore's phone of some secret service stuff, but there was no way you could get the number to call him back because not only had the number gone but the whole call history had gone. I don't think anyone's got Bono's number." contactmusic

They Dance Alone (Morleigh dancing) - In 1988, ISO (Daniel Ezralow, Jamey Hampton, Ashley Roland, and Morleigh Steinberg) choreographed and performed the Music Television Video for Sting's They Dance Alone, a protest to the political problems in the Republic of Chile, which has been seen throughout the world. In the same year, ISO also organized a dance benefit at the Joyce Theatre in New York to raise funds for Amnesty International. This video is called 'The Dance Alone' version cueca solo ("cueca" is the national dance of Chile), and Sting sings with Daniel.

Lyrics for: They Dance Alone - Why are these women here dancing on their own? / Why is there this sadness in their eyes? / Why are the soldiers here / Their faces fixed like stone? / I can't see what it is they despise / They're dancing with the missing / They're dancing with the dead / They dance with the invisible ones / Their anguish is unsaid / They're dancing with their fathers / They're dancing with their sons / They're dancing with their husbands / They dance alone / They dance alone / It's the only form of protest they're allowed / I've seen their silent faces they scream so loud / If they were to speak these words they'd go missing too / Another woman on the torture table what else can they do / They're dancing with the missing / They're dancing with the dead / They dance with the invisible ones / Their anguish is unsaid / They're dancing with their fathers / They're dancing with their sons / They're dancing with their husbands / They dance alone / They dance alone / One day we'll dance on their graves / One day we'll sing our freedom / One day we'll laugh in our joy / And we'll dance / One day we'll dance on their graves / One day we'll sing our freedom / One day we'll laugh in our joy / And we'll dance / Ellas danzan con los desaparecidos / Danzan con los muertos / Danzan con amores invisibles / Con silenciosa angustia / Danzan con sus padres / Con sus hijos / Con sus esposos / Ellas danzan solas / Danzan solas / Hey Mr. Pinochet / You've sown a bitter crop / It's foreign money that supports you / One day the money's going to stop / No wages for your torturer / No budget for your gun / Can you think of your own mother / Dancin' with her invisible son / They're dancing with the missing / They're dancing with the dead / They dance with the invisible ones / Their anguish is unsaid / They're dancing with their fathers / They're dancing with their sons / They're dancing with their husbands / They dance alone / They dance alone

Sting wrote this after he saw a brief news story about women dancing in the streets of Chile torn apart by the Pinochet regime. The women were dancing in the streets with pictures of their husbands, fathers, brothers or sons pinned to their clothes or they were holding the pictures and dancing with them. Branford Marsalis played the sax. This was released as a single along with a Spanish version of the song, "Ellas Danzan Solas."

This song has the crude and sad sounds of the hard 70's and 80's in South America, it's the sounds of Andes Mountains. At the final a taste of Brazil's samba.

Edge&Morleigh and Bono&Ali, at REM's show in Dublin (June 30, 2007)

U2 stars join R.E.M. for residency - Bono and The Edge were among the sold out Olympia Theatre audience in Dublin, Ireland checking out R.E.M's latest material on Saturday night. The Losing My Religion band are staging five 'Working Rehearsals' at the venue to test new songs ahead of an upcoming album and tour. R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills told the crowd the band chose Dublin for their pre-tour workout because R.E.M. consider the Irish to be "some of the best fans in the world". Walking onstage holding a Guinness, frontman Michael Stipe started the set with new songs Living Wells and Staring Down, admitting some of the new tracks had yet to be performed by the whole group. Other new songs included Mr. Richards, Houston, Man Size Wreath and Till The Day Is Done. Writer of Most Widely Recorded Song Ever, 'Unchained Melody,' Hy Zaret Dies at 99  (July 2, 2007) - Lyricist Hy Zaret, who wrote the haunting words to "Unchained Melody," one of the most frequently recorded songs of the 20th century, has died at age 99. Zaret died at his home Monday, about a month shy of his 100th birthday, his son, Robert Zaret, said Tuesday. He penned words to many songs and advertising jingles but his biggest hit was "Unchained Melody," written in 1955 for a film called "Unchained." It brought Zaret and Alex North, the composer, an Academy Award nomination for best song. Zaret refused the producer's request to work the word "unchained" into the lyrics, instead writing to express the feelings of a lover who has "hungered for your touch a long, lonely time." The song was recorded by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Lena Horne, U2, Guy Lombardo, Vito & the Salutations and Joni Mitchell, who incorporated fragments into her song "Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody." ... In later years, Zaret had to fend off the claims by another man, electrical engineer William Stirrat, who said he wrote the "Unchained Melody" lyrics as a teenager in the 1930s and even legally changed his name to Hy Zaret. Robert Zaret and Steinblatt both said the dispute was resolved completely in favor of the real Zaret, who continued to receive all royalties. Steinblatt said Stirrat died in 2004. foxnews

Universal challenges Apple over iTunes -NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- Universal Music Group has told Apple Inc. it won't renew its contract to sell music through iTunes, a published report said Monday. The world's biggest music corporation said it would instead market music to Apple "at will," which could let the unit of French conglomerate Vivendi SA remove its songs from the iTunes service on short notice if the two sides disagree on pricing or other terms, The New York Times reported. Universal's artist roster includes Shania Twain, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Tupac Shakur, U2, Akon, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Amy Winehouse and 50 Cent. If Universal pulls its catalog, iTunes would lose access to one in every three new releases sold in the United States, Nielsen SoundScan data said. Universal and Apple representatives declined to comment. The move, following a negotiations standoff, reflects a boiling over of long-simmering tensions between Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs and the major record labels, the Times said. The labels reportedly don't like iTunes' near-monopoly in the digital sector and are particularly upset about Jobs's stance on song pricing and the iPod's lack of compatibility with music services other than iTunes, the newspaper said. upi

Levee Work Might Imperil French Quarter - Repairs To Levee System Could Put French Quarter In Greater Peril Than Before Katrina

Experts say the stronger levees and flood walls could funnel storm water into the cul-de-sac of the Industrial Canal, a waterway only 2 miles from Bourbon Street, and overwhelm the 12-foot concrete flood walls that shield some of the city's most cherished neighborhoods. Edge and Bono were at REM show in Dublin (June 30, 2007)

 - Bono and Edge were at the first of R.E.M.'s 5-Night Dublin. They were sitting in one of the fancy boxes with Gavin Friday, Guggi, and their wives. (Pretty sure it was Morleigh anyway. It was hard to see). Michael Stipe thanked Bono and Edge at the beginning. It was a cool gig. The venue is really small. They're calling them 'Working Rehearsals' so they did ten brand new songs. The older songs were all from the early 80's except for two gems from New Adventures in Hi-Fi (U2's Pop I reckon, i.e. incredible yet some somewhat unappreciated album). Peter Buck actually seemed to be enjoying performing which is very out of character for him! Stipe was singing most of the lyrics from a laptop. by DublinGuy, on Interference - Read more on remhq
